so if you wrote really awesome essays, but had an ACT writing score of 10

Would that throw up a red flag? I read the writing subscores are used "as a validity check on the application essay." I messed up really bad on the writing section, and sort of squandered my time by being perfectionistic, such that I stopped mid-sentence.

u mean the essays was a ten or the overall writing score was a 10??....if your essay was a 10 then dude what are you talking about a 10 is a good score and they're not gonna think you hired someone to do your essay for you because you scored a 10

I got a 10 and would assume that anything above an 8 or 9 would not be questioned on its legitimacy. The school should know that there's a distinct different between timed writing and untimed writing.

My friend was perhaps the best writer in our grade and her essays probably helped her get into college. She got an 8 on the writing section on the SAT. She now attends Princeton. Besides, a 10 isn't a bad score at all, especially when you're being graded on criteria such as length and ability to insert as many vocabulary words as possible within 25 minutes. Colleges realize this. Don't worry.
