I have a question for you while you wait for the EA decisions! :)

I am an intl applicant considering applying RD, however, I do realize that my need for some finaid will probably keep me out.

So - if I apply as an international without asking for finaid and get accepted - can I then later, say during my sophomore year, apply for finaid IF I AM AWARDED A GREEN CARD? (I applied for one of 'em 2010s). That would make me a permanent resident, and thus eligible for some federal aid.

I know it is a risky strategy but I just wanted to know if it's possible :)

yea im not completely sure either
but a friend i had a couple of years ago was in a tough spot because she got into Harvard in April, but got citizenship in june, so she couldn't apply for financial aide
:'(
but go for it!

OK - Guess I'll file a finaid app this year and just ask for a couple of thousand dollars then. I can afford my freshman and sophomore year, but I'll sure as H run in to problems after that! :D

The federal aid isn't what's going to be very helpful. The Stanford Fund scholarship will.

You don't seem to be making a critical distinction here: Stanford is need-aware for internationals, but for those it does accept, it will cover any need they have. I know of at least a few international students who pay $0.

I'm not sure how Stanford handles this, but in theory an international could a) not apply for financial aid, and then b), after being accepted, apply for aid. This most likely isn't allowed--Stanford probably either requires internationals to give their financial info beforehand or doesn't allow them to apply for aid after a deadline. Something would limit this (or else need-aware admissions would be pointless).

the only thing I know is that Stanford won't give you any aid ever, if you don't ask for it when applying.

Not true. You can apply for aid after being accepted. I know some who did. The financial aid office may be even more lenient than that. And you can always apply the next year (perhaps the next quarter, or at any time).

"Please note that if you are an international student admitted
without financial aid you are expected to fully fund your
studies while at Stanford. Financial aid will not be available
to you in later years."
