How much does the box matter in the decision? I plan to just include a picture with no explanation, but what if they can't understand it? Should I include a small description/caption?

Thanks!

It really doesn't affect admissions, do what you want..everyone is stressing out too much over the box...

mostly it's just used to remember you by. it will not have much of (if any) effect on rice's decision to admit or reject you.

It gives the counselors a way to remember your application, so the more creative you are in the box, the better they can advocate for you in front of the admission committee.

I put a miniature rubik's cube in mine. I will be hand delivering it on January second because I will be on my campus visit that day.

^^^ haha, hoow is that going to fit in your file?

maybe it has a keychain you can stick onto the file folder hahaha.

my friend last year said (and i quote), "take a lot of time to think about your rice box. make it really good!"

shes at washu now but i have no idea if what she said reflects what adcom thinks.

hahah rice box. bad, bad humor.

Well a full size 3x3 rubik's cube actually fits perfectly inside the box, but I thought that might be overdoing it lol. So I got one of those mini ones that is still fully functioning and taped it in. Good point about the file, but I guess if it wont fit in they will have to keep it out on their desk and they will constantly be reminded of me, lol. I dont know if that is good or bad for my admissions decision...
Rubik's cubes really do appeal to me, so it is legit. I am getting better and better at it too, Im down to 56 seconds now.

Don't worry too much about the box. It's just one aspect of the application and unless you put something absolutely horrible in it (offensive, not just something that fails to be brilliant) it's not going to keep you from getting in. If you manage to come up with something outstanding that conveys an aspect of you that you haven't managed to convey in other parts of your application - good job. If not, just put something and don't worry about it too much. I know that I certainly did not get into Rice on the basis of my box.

lol I love the rubik's cube idea. You could put a solved one and write "56 seconds" on it, or put a rigged rubik's cube that can never be solved (messed up colors or something) and write "If you can solve this I will cancel my application!" but that would be overdoing it :P

And then the admissions officer peels off the stickers of the impossible cube, rearranges them, and sends the cube back with a rejection letter. Aww, so cruel. =P

I taped in a picture of a nudibranch (a type of sea slug...don't laugh! They're absolutely gorgeous), with the caption "my favorite invertebrate." That was the most fun part of the application. :)

Dang it I think I was being too conservative compared to everyone else.. I considered putting a picture of a fish but I didn't want to scare them so I changed my idea.. but now I regret it :(
The box probably made me more nervous than the essays did...

Someone should have put an ad(more garish the better), a baseball mitt, and a picture of themselves.

I like cheap plays on words, what can I say. (and there have probably been about 40000x of those, as I'm sure I'm not that creative, but hey)

I think it would be great to put a picture of one of the admissions officer's pets and a ransom.

I put a picture of my tennis team doing a big cheer with all our rackets up and then on the side I wrote "TEAM SPIRIT!". I know...really cheesy. But whatever... A friend of mine filled hers with black electrical tape.

I drew a picture in it, which relates to my Rice supplement essay... I wasn't all that creative though......:(

i drew brightly colors stars. they're pretty much beautiful.

One of my kids stuck a scrap of fabric; one stuck a picture of a favorite tennis player or ultimate frisbee player. (I just asked him, and he doesn't remember.) There is no wrong answer to the box. ;)
