I found out yesterday afternoon that I got in! Super excited to meet all of yall!
It’s great to see everyone on the thread – for about a week no one really posted and it seemed pretty dead. Oh well, SOAR 2015, here we come!
Would applicants mind sharing their stats?
@halex44 I think my son wrote a good answer to the Why Rice? prompt in the SOAR application. My son’s stats: 4.0 UW GPA, 2310 SAT, 36 ACT, 3/729 rank at large public school, AP National Scholar, He earned a 228 PSAT, so should be a NMF. He has good but not great ECs. I think most people are unaware of the program, so few apply.
Hi all. Congrats on the acceptances! My emails failed as well, three times. But I still got a reply saying they would let me know about my travel arrangements later the same day. I think the emails are just going into their spam folder, and that’s probably because the emails have attachments. Not sure if that’s a comfort to any of you, just though I’d let you guys know.
@cerealwithoats I think you’re right. I just got a reply from them and it had “SPAM Re: Rice SOAR Registration Form” as the subject. It said my form appeared blank and I needed to resubmit. I guess I gotta go do it again.
Same here. I sent it 3 times got no response, then sent it to the admin@rice.edu email asking them to forward it to whoever needs it at SOAR. Then I got a response from the email that didn’t work saying they will be contacting me with further travel arrangements.
Hmm that’s odd… The email worked for me the first time I submitted it. Then I received an email from the SOAR people saying that someone would be in contact with me soon about my travel arrangements.
I submitted my application and got confirmation on Septermber 2nd, still waiting for a response. They said they would respond no later than the 11th.
@jfleit18 Yeah I didn’t get an acceptance back for a solid month, so don’t worry too much about not having a response yet; it’s possible they’re just re-reading yr. rad essay.
@DressingIron I really hope I get in to this thing, Rice is pretty much my reach and my gpa + scores are definitely on the lower end of their numbers but I can just hope. I got the hispanic card to play, so that could help.
They already sent me a fee waiver for AP scores supposedly so hopefully I’m on the radar as a prospective student.
I got an email saying the program is full so they can’t accept me. Is this the standard reject ema or does anyone know if they actually couldn’t accept me?
@jfleit18 I mean, there’s like ten people /just in this thread/ who say they’re going. SOAR only takes like 60 people, so it’s verrry possible that they’re not BSing you.
I think it was a standard rejection because I recieved the same email and the reason/one of the known reasons why I was rejected was because I submitted a transcript with no second semester 11 grade grades. I’m pretty sure I was an auto-reject because I emailed someone after I sent in the app and he said only people with full transcripts would be considered.
Hey guys, I just got accepted today! I was just wondering if anyone knew what we have to bring and around what time do we arrive. I’m so excited to go!
I wish I had known about SOAR earlier! For those who did not get in, an overnight visit (offered mon-thurs) and attending discover rice could always be an option. Less convenient, but I think still worthwhile!
@sweetpuppy Though, notably, only really an option for people with the funds to get theyselves down to Houston for a visit; I know some of us in this thread applied to SOAR particularly /because/ we couldn’t afford the cost of visiting Rice otherwise.
I apologize! Please know that I did not intend for my suggestion to belittle the cost of flying down to Houston in any way. It simply was my feeble attempt at helping
Hell, my family has the funds to visit anywhere, but it’s not like we’re about to spend money to visit a college thousands of miles away, especially one I don’t even know I would get into.
Has anyone that’s gotten the email saying they’ll be contacted about travel arrangements actually been contacted yet? They emailed me that on Sunday and I have yet to hear back from them. I just feel like they’re cutting it pretty close time wise. Haverford’s program for example sent me my plane ticket over two weeks ago and their fly isn’t till the end of October Or maybe I’m just really excited to get my plane ticket in my hand!
