Social life at Case

So I am a senior in high school trying to choose which school to attend next year. After visiting case i thought it was definitely the place for me. However, i have read so many posts about it being boring im not so sure anymore. The posts ive read in defense of the case social scene all just mention the museums near case and the bus trip to target. What about parties are there any?? I don't want to go to a huge party school like OSU but i do want to have some fun!!
Also I am not going to be an engineering major and was wondering if this would affect my time at case.

All input is appreciated! Thanks

You’ll probably gain more from hearing from students who attend the school. But, I will add some observations. As a parent of a son (engineering) who will be attending Case next year, we talked to many students. First and foremost, I think that Case attracts serious students who are invested in their studies, regardless of their major. But, there seem to be a lot of social opportunities - including undergrad activities, clubs, sports, etc. We had the sense that there are parties at Case and that kids have a good time there. There is a very active greek life and there is a lot of opportunity to have fun with other kids. But, emphasis is different than many schools - fraternities/sororities are more inclusive, community minded, and less wild party driven. A lot is going to depend on what your definition of “fun” is.

When I visited, they had several current students talk about their experience and what they were involved in. A lot of them were involved in research - which I loved - but we didn’t hear anyone mention being involved in a non-academic club/activity. Given we only talked with 12-13 students, it was still a little bit of a concern. I’m not into the heavy party and drinking scene, but I do want to find some activities that aren’t completely academic and it sounded like it there weren’t as many opportunities for that. As mentioned earlier almost all the fraternities are community service based, so they aren’t your typical frats. It did sound like students got involved, but most activities were geared towards academics rather then being social. Hope that helps.

thanks!

Can any current students comment though?

They do have “regular” frats and sororities - they may not be Animal House (this is Case, after all), but they’re not just community service focused. Not sure how many parties there are beyond the Greeks and the organized events, of which there are quite a few.

thanks! any other current students care to comment?

This is also my son’s concern. He is choosing between Case, U Maryland CP, and U Rochester for engineering. Case seems to have a great mix of hands on and thoeretical teaching, is small and you can easily get involved in research. He had an overnight and it seems like the students don’t have so much to do and don’t wander to the nearby areas of Little Italy or Cleveland hts. He does not want to have to join a frat to have fun. Any thoughts?

Whenever I am in Cleveland I see lots of CWRU sweatshirts in Little Italy. Some of the fraternity houses are actually in Little Italy.

If a student wants a party school CWRU is not the place for them. It just isn’t.

Here is the list of all CWRU’s Clubs and Organizations.

If you can’t find an interest and make some friends to do things with then you are just not trying. There are lots of things to do while studying at Case and University Circle has lots of opportunities to get involved in the music and arts too.

I am a current sophomore at Case and you’re probably looking for more of a sorority-type life, without the huge school attached to it. Plenty of students go out on the weekend, but keep in mind that this is a difficult school, students get a lot of work (in the middle of three papers and an exam due next week and we’re at the end of the term!), and you won’t always have time to socialize the way you might if you went to a more lax school. About 30% of students are involved in sororities and fraternities (not frats here, they do stress being called fraternities), and though I am not, most of my friends are involved and do enjoy the social aspect of it. There are also tons of clubs to join, I myself am a part of the Residence Hall Association which I love, plus there are other large organizations students join such as Undergraduate Student Government and the University Programs Board. I would urge you, if you do come to Case, to get involved outside of Greek or party life, because those are the more well rounded students!

Current sophomore here. If you’re male and you want to party your freshman year, you MUST join a fraternity. I won’t bias you towards any one here, but the groups that party the most are the ones that hold party-imitation events during (dry) rush. If you do join one of them, you should be able to socialize to your heart’s content. There won’t be OSU-style blowout ragers, but it sounds like you’re ok with that anyway. If you’re female, you should be able to find/get into parties fairly easily.

Being a non-engineer shouldn’t present any problems. You might get some light-hearted flak if you’re business or something but everyone puts in work.
