Social Life at Case

Hi,

So I was accepted to Case but I'm a little scared of having no social life there. I'm not a huge partier, but I usually go out 2 or 3 nights a week. Is there a lot of stuff to do on campus and in Cleveland? Are people into sports at Case? In a nutshell, how is the social life at Case?

Alright let me give you the skinny, and I hope some of my classmates will follow up on this. The Social Life at Case if what you make of it.

There are a lot of people that don't like to go out and do stuff, but at the same time, there will be a solid collection of students who will. I think there are a higher percentage of people who stay in and play board games or WoW than other universities, but then there are good number of people who like to go out and party. I would like to say each grade coming in is a little more social.

For underclassmen, the main source of partying is at frats. A lot of students drink in their rooms, but usually these are small gatherings. The RA staff is pretty cool in general so long as you don't make too much noise. If you get caught, there's usually a slap on the wrist, and if you're caught multiple times, you have to attend AA. Alcohol is not hard to find.

The frats vary, there are some that are dry, but most of them try to maintain a balance of studying and partying. The fraternities also put on open parties that are usually well attended (mostly by freshmen). On other nights, the fraternities are usually kind of exclusive, you have to know someone to get in...or be a girl. This is because Greek Life has strict policies, and the fraternities are often held accountable for situations even out of their control.

Some people are afraid of the idea of fraternities. I was not too keen on joining when I came to Case, but I found myself joining my first semester here. It's Case. To stay in the school and maintain scholarships etc., you have to study. Even the fraternities that party do their share of studying. I think no fraternity had a GPA less than 3 (I believe the sororities were much higher...don't hold me to that). Also, Greeks hold a significant portion of the leadership in organizations like USG etc.

In terms of going out, it's kind of hard to get friends to go to the restaurants and stuff. I wouldn't call people anti-social, it's just that restaurants cost money and it's college; students don't have money. In terms of the bars, I would say it helps to have a fake ID and I think the bars aren't really strict about them.

To get the most out of Case socially, I would say to get involved. Explore different organizations because that's where you'll meet people of different classes and that's where you'll make the most friends.

I'll add more later if I think of anything, ask more questions if you have any.

Sach is definitely right
Im a sophomore at Case and can attest to most of what he says.

Really, it also depends on your definition of "going out" two or three nights a week. If you want to go to bars or clubbing, using the RTA is probably the easiest, unless you have a DD, because they stop running at like 3am.
Thursdays are college nights at most clubs/bars, like in most areas.

IM sports are very popular, there are tons of them, you just need to go down to Veale (the athletic center) and look for the signs and posters on the walls as you walk in.

In the freshmen dorms, there are usually groups of kids who will go downstairs to the lobby to watch big games, the RAs and stuff try to organize things too. ANd I'm pretty sure there is a campus wide NCAA bracket going around, except you can't be "betting" money, since thats illegal, there are prizes or something involved.

Drinking in your or your friend's room is not bad, if oyu keep it small and controlled. Feel out your RA the first couple weeks of school, getting to know them is the best indicator whether they'll be a hard@ss or not.

Cleveland does have a collection of nice restaraunts and things, but like Sach said, $$ is usually an issue.

Case's social life is improving as the classes come in. This year's freshmen are more "normal" and less of the case stereotype than my class was, and we did it more than the 09 class, etc, etc.

wow thanks for the responses. It seems like Case's social life is better than I expected! Do people go to varsity sporting events (like football, etc.)?

football and soccer have recently become more popular with the successes, mens soccer was invited to the NCAA tourney last year, and just missed it this year. Football won a conference championship, and won their first round playoff game before losing to Wabash in the 2nd round.

Swim meets draw ok crowds, but mostly from swimmers' friends, though some former swimmers do attend.

Basket ball is not very good, so not many people go to those games...

Also a sophmore here,

I don't really have anything to add to sach or euihyun- I do agree with everything they said though, especially that each class seems to be more social than the one before it.

Soccer games aren't as well attended as I'd like. Soccer is more of a cult fan sport I would say. They are well attended by the die-hards who go to every game. It's a lot of fun. Football was awesome this year, but I barely went to any games. I think some of the people at the football games just **** me off. I have friends on both teams, and when I go to games, it's to support them. I went to one basketball game, but it was part of the tournament back in December. I only went because I was going with the business fraternity as well as one of the professors. It was very well attended. The team is really bad though, which is a bummer. I hope to actually go to some baseball games considering the field is right across the street. Should be interesting.

Let me know if you have any more questions...or anyone here.

What are some of your favorite restaurants to eat at off campus? I'm coming next Thursday to see Chicago and my Dad and I want to go out before. I've heard Mamma Santas is good in Little Italy. Anything else?

Chicago? you mean Cleveland?

Mama Santas is okay. Valentino's has good pizza. Trattoria is pretty good. Anthony's has a five dollar spaghetti special on Fridays which is popular amongst students...who know about it. They have really good deserts. Closer to campus, Falafel Cafe (Middle Eastern food) is the only real restaurant. It's pretty good, but everything is pretty much the same.

You could go to Coventry where there's sushi, Hunan, Thai and Mongolian BBQ.

I like Mi Pueblo (Mexican), it's near the village. Other favorites are Trattoria, Valentino's has my favorite pizza. BDs Mongolian BBQ is good too if you're really hungry.

I've only been to Mama Santos once, and I had pizza that did not live up to expectations.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm seeing Chicago the musical, put on by the Footlighters.

The publicity photos of Chicago the musical by the Footlighters are going to debunk a lot of the stereotypes about the students at Case... ;)

Er, the picture is of the Case cast?

Yep, it is. I recognize most of the girls in that picture from around campus

Funny you mentioned Anthony's. We were there Fri. night. Went to Experience Case Friday. Son did overnight and husband and I went to Little Italy for dinner. Anthony's was packed. We saw many students doing the all-you-can-eat spaghetti and meatballs. We had pizza which was great. It's a casual place with good decent priced food. Last spring S and I came for a visit and at at Mama Santas. I agree with Sachmoney- pizza was just ok. If S ends up going to Case I'll try Valentinos. BTW- he had a wonderful experience and can see himself at CWRU. We were pleased with everything too.

what stereotypes is it debunking WS17?

The "Chicago" girls look awesome! Nicely photographed.

My daughter is a second year student at CASE. I’d agree with everything that has been posted. She has gotten involved at Case and is in a sorority and lives in the house. She does her share of partying; however is a very good student also. Case is a great place and if you look for things to do, you can find them. She is not into sports, however, since attending CASE she has gone to 2 Indian games, 1 Browns game and about 5 concerts. Just recently went to House of Blues downtown for a concert and had a great time. Some people complain about Cleveland, but my daughter has found so much to add to her college experience. Plus she said most of the students she has met have been very very nice!

I think WS17 means the stereo type that most of the girls at case aren't very attractive and are just as socially awkward as the stereotype of the case guy. Also that the case students just sit in their rooms playing WoW or some other computer game.

Both aren't very accurate any more, naturally, if you're outgoing and social, you'll attract and find others who are like you.

Anthony's is better for their $5 all you can eat pasta on fridays
but the problem is their service seems to be worsening every time I go.

Mama Santas is far better, but a bit more expensive, but WELL WELL worth it in every manner

For pizza, go to Valentinos...Mama Santas...is in my opinion far inferior to Valentinos. Mama Santas pizzas are not very expensive at all. I was surprised. Mama Santas had a delicious chicken parm. I went there twice last weekend. I've only been to Trattoria (good), Mama Santas, and Anthony's. Presti's has good desert.
