I was just wondering how the college life is if living on their campus. There are some negative reports but I just want more reviews. Thank you!
BTW, I am used the “City Life”/Urban

Social life is what YOU make of it. Join clubs, IM sports (in the dorms, it’s easy–just approach your RA and ask him/her to sign you up, since the RA for each floor in the dorms are responsible for residence hall IM sign-ups), talk to people in class, etc. If you happen to get along with your roommate(s) and they invite you to hang out with them, do so (if you like them, that is). If you’re not a social person, then coming to Davis (or any college for that matter) wouldn’t make you become more social anyway. You have to put forth the effort to have a social life at Davis.

But are there alot of places to hangout around that area or is it very isolated?

Sacramento is 30 minutes away, so if you have a car, you can go to Sac for the weekend. I know a lot of people who bring their car with them to Davis do that. There’s also Woodland about 15-20 minutes away (again by car, but there’s also a bus line that takes you to Woodland from Davis). San Francisco is about 1.5-2 hours away. It’s not as isolated as you think. Downtown Davis (which is right next to campus. Just walk past the Social Sciences building, aka what we call the Death Star due to its architecture, and you’re there) also has nifty shops and local restaurants to check out. The clubs I’m in likes to go downtown for something to eat after club meetings. Additionally, there’s the U-Mall (which isn’t really a mall) right across the street from Cuarto and Segundo, which has places like Starbucks (one of the popular study and hangout areas, since I always see a bunch of students there), Forever21, Trader Joes, World Market, Subway, The Grad (a bar), a froyo place (Sugarplum), etc.

LOL soprano, sorry, but your description makes davis sound hella boring!

i’m not a student (i have a child, an adult child, who attends davis). we are from southern california, large city, etc. there will be an adjustment period if you’re coming from a major city to the town of davis. that’s unavoidable. but it needn’t be negative, it’s just different. don’t come to davis expecting los angeles…it just is not that type of place. there is something to be said for going to undergrad in a more serene place (serene doesn’t mean boring), because the distractions of major cities can throw some people off their game, and the main reason you’re going to school is to get the education (degree) and graduate. davis is noticeably more quiet than life in a large city. it’s more peaceful. people don’t seem as stressed (at least in town; i know that the students are stressed at times when school is in session). use the campus as your social life (clubs, mondavi center performances, sports events, etc.). you probably will not have the time to drive to sf or oakland or even sacto all that often once the quarter is in full swing. appreciate the natural beauty of davis (the campus and town), the walkability, the clean smog-free air. then after four years, get back to the crazy insanity that is city life. or don’t.

it will be “isolated” if you isolate yourself. a good way to do that would be coming into it expecting it to fit the description of a campus that is adjacent to a major city when that isn’t what it is.

@ calimami: and that is why I will never be a tour guide, LOL.

But if you’re into the party scene, v3stige, there are also people who hold house parties throughout Davis on weekends at various times of the year. Only con is that you need to know at least one person there, so start talking to people in classes and making friends with upperclassmen, since they’re the ones who live off-campus and therefore can throw parties. :). Additionally, you can also hit up Frat Row–from what I’ve seen, they tend to throw a bunch of parties at the beginning of each quarter (but more often during fall quarter).

haha thanks for the info guys. I’m not into the party life but I enjoy eating out with friends and going to the mall and things like that and I was just wondering if there are good amounts of places around campus that I can choose from.

Well for that, just hit upDaviswiki. Type something into the search bar and it’ll give you locations in Davis and nearby cities that match what you’re looking for.

soprano: haha.

good luck with your finals. :-)

thank you guys for the info!
