Social Scene

Well to start off, I'm a chiller dude from San Diego who loves to play reggae and have a good time. I've been accepted to some other high end schools as well as some of the good old UCs, I've recieved substantial financial aid from U of R which makes the financial aspect of attending neglible. I realize that the culture shock for me is going to be huge regardless of the scene, due to weather (I've never lived where there is more than 7 inches of precipitation/yr), mentality of everyone around and well, just about everything. I visited campus last april and found it quite nice (not the best but good enough), I was disappointed that the closest place to get food off campus was well, a decent walk away, but Rochester is pretty close but I have no clue what the city itself is like.

The thing that is holding back my SIR is my lack of confidence of the social/party scene at U of R. I realize that compared to UC Santa Barbara (where I would go, if the academics were more focused towards my major (Comp. Eng. with spec in optics)), the scene would be hardly comparable but I want to make sure there is atleast a bit of partying going on. If there isn't any on weekends, I'd lose my sanity (I already party Fri/Sat and sometimes other days). Sadly in most cases specialized academics are inversely related to social scenes so I fear the worst.

So whats the word on the scene?

I'm in a little bit of the same boat as you, still trying to decide between U of Washington and Carnegie Mellon. I get the feeling that U of R will probably be the middle ground between these two and with the scholarship they offered me its prolly where ill end up. I'm still curious what life is like at Rochester though just to make sure im making the right call.

There are at least some Greek parties every weekend, and I know a fair number of others as well. My d has never lacked for things to do.
