So I was always going to apply to UCLA for comm, but its so insanely difficult to get into that I'm thinking of applying as a Sociology major.

My GPA is about a 3.89, probably gonna be 3.92 by the time I apply. I haven't taken English 2 yet, but my Counselor said I should be fine if I just make sure I take it in the Winter.

Now heres the thing...

Assist.org says I need 4 pre-reqs (Sociology 1, Finite Math or Calculus, Stats, AND Sociology 20.) However, no where on either the Santa Monica College or UCLA agreements does it say I need Sociology 20.

I took Sociology 1 and am taking Stats right now, but I will not be taking Finite until the Spring. Think I still have a chance?

I have all my pre-reqs for Comm, but I dont think I have a good chance because of the GPA being too low for such a competitive major.

So I'm looking at Comm with all my pre-reqs done, but low GPA.

Or....

Sociology with a high GPA, but not having all my pre-reqs done...

3.92 for comm is not bad at all since you have all pre-reqs done. I have 2 friends who got
into UCLA as comm major with around 3.9 from smc last year.

soc- Missing 2 pre-reqs out of 4 isn’t a problem? other than that, you should be fine

Is it possible to get into communications with a 3.9 but personal statements that do not talk about communications whatsoever? My essays are about business for haas.

@mkmkmk were you being sarcastic about the Sociology? I couldn’t tell.

I’m still uncertain as to why SMC and UCLA do not list Sociology 20 as a pre-req, but I guess ASSIST is what is supposed to be the most up to date.

If I do them both in the Spring do you think they will let me in?

Thanks for looking that up for me SMCguy, but unfortunately I have to take English 2 as my first priority in the Winter, since I was stupid and didn’t do it before, and SMC only allows 5 units max for the Winter sessions.

From what I heard from the UCLA representative I met with in late October, she told me that they only looked at 3.9s or higher for comm, so that could be a 3.90 or 3.91. But she basically told me that I had a slim to none chance with a 3.92.

Also, are you sure it isn’t Sociology 20? Not 4.

Correction: Yeah, you’re right. SOCIOL 4, Sociological Analysis. Just looked it up on SMC’s course catalog an figure that has to be right considering there is no Sociology 20!

@Investment Most likely no. The applications for communications at UCLA are reviewed by the communications department themselves and not the admissions staff. So I think they are really looking for personal statements that pertain directly to communications.

(I got this info from my visit with a UCLA representative)

I know it really is. I had it in my head that I would do it no matter how hard, but now I’m seriously considering Sociology. I’m just not sure I will be taken seriously without having those two pre-reqs done. Even if I do them in Spring.
