My son has a weighted average of 102.5, SAT of 1870 and a good well rounded resume. He's been told that SOM is so competitive, he might get rejected and should consider applying for regular admissions. Also, if he doesn't get into SOM, they don't' consider the application for general Binghamton admissions. I think he'd rather go to Binghamton for possibly Economics, than not get into the college at all. I think he should take the risk and apply to SOM because its such a good program and he has a great average- but he's concerned. Any suggestions or thoughts on his chance of admission to SOM?

Luckily, your information is wrong! When you apply, you can apply to one school-- SOM, for example-- but you also have the option of putting a second choice. So he can apply to SOM but also put down that he wants to be considered for Harpur (the “regular” school) if he doesn’t get into SOM. His SAT is fairly low but if his math score is high then maybe it’ll balance out. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply! I hoped my information was wrong, but unfortunately, neither of us noticed that option for a second choice school on Binghamton’s supplement. My son ultimately decided to apply SOM and take his chances. ALso, when he called Admissions, they told him he had to make a choice, only apply to SOM if you know you want to major in business, otherwise don’t take the risk. I don’t have a gauge if his scores are competitive … any thoughts? He got a 680 Math SAT, a 700 on Math1 and a 4 on AP Statistics. Hope so and thanks again…

Are you In state? When my Son applied, he chose finance which automatically made the SOM his first choice. He is at Binghamton now and loves it.

Yes we’re In state. My son chose business which, like your son, we figured automatically made SOM first choice. His concern was how competitive that program is and if you don’t get into SOM, they don’t place you in general admissions pool. My older son is at Binghamton now but not in SOM and he loves it too!
