some GOOD EC's ?

whats up guys I'm a junior in high school and right now my EC's are basically as follows:

football (9-11) captain
winter/spring track (9-11) captain
volunteer work 100+ at a hospital

what are some other good EC's that you guys would recommend for me to take part in? my schedule is already full up because of sports and my studies.. but do you guys think that this is enough or do i need a lot more

Clubs, and work your way up to an officer position.

are those varsity level sports? also you do need to join some clubs you're interested in. also what are your hobbies?

At this point any club you join will look like a filler on your app. If you're passionate about your two sports (and your hospital work), then you're fine where your at.

Being an officer doesn't mean much if you don't DO anything substantial as an officer, IMO.

It's much more important that you choose your extracurriculars based on what you're interested in, as opposed to what "looks good". Anything (yes, including underwater basket weaving) looks good if you are truly, genuinely interested in it (and can demonstrate it).

didn't notice you are a junior. i'd have to say i agree with Johnson.

im junior and will starting a club and being prez be filler? Im going to apply to business/science programs and its a hiking club :) I love hiking.

Thanks for the input guys, but I actually genuinely wanted to join the Global Village club which was just recently started and is basically promoting awareness around the world and trying to help other nations.. so thats probably the only club I'll be in and hopefully I can become an officer.

And yes, these sports are varsity level sports I'm also part of the Boys Athletic Association if that counts as a club? It's basically trying to raise money for our school sports. Also, do any of you know if Dartmouth or BC put a high emphasis on EC's like clubs or do you think my sports, volunteer work, and church work (sorry I forgot to post that, I've done church work like altar serving and youth group advising since i was in 9th grade) will be okay for me ?

Try a week long volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, your church could probably hook you up with a group build. You could try a volunteer spot at a museum or art museum that would put a little balance of culture with the sports.

Yes, I think that Athletic Association counts. Possibly try to get a leadership position there. But, I think key for you would be getting recruited for sports to be honest. Maybe talk to the coaches at both schools?

Don't do Habitat for Humanity. Seriously, it's such bs. You PAY to help others. Honestly, he volunteers and doesn't need to pay his way out of volunteering. Possibly though, you could try to do more at your volunteer job.

Stick to what you got and possibly try to become the manager for another team. I'm a tennis player myself and during my off-season, I was the manager for the boys' team. Possibly do the same for the girls' team if you're friendly with the coach? Play up your sports leadership and your skills!

I would consider being a manager for another team but the thing is I do sports year round, so I don't have an off season. But yeah I am captain of both my teams (football/track).. but at the same time I don't know if my level is of D1 caliber YET, but I'll be training of course since thats my dream to play. But yeah thanks a lot.

Oh, and I'm also doing this business thing at Columbia University where you apply and if you get accepted you take this business intro course does that count as an EC or just another thing you put on your app?

Try to cure cancer over the summer maybe, write a New York Times bestselling novel, climb mount everest, or maybe start your own business that quickly becomes a multimillion dollar corporate conglomeration.

sprtn117, all that ain't gonna get you in...you gotta win the Nobel Prize as well to have a 'decent' EC list!

If you join a club that you'll enjoy, then it won't be a filler, especially if you can demostrate that you're passionate about it.
If you join a club to look good on applications, then yes, it will be a filler.

I'm a junior, and started 3 new clubs this year and I love them, have put a lot of time into them, and will demostrate that on my application. I would be insulted if someone considered them "fillers." But if you join something just to improve your ECs, colleges will probably be able to tell.

So how exactly do you "demonstrate" that the clubs you joined are not fillers?

If your schedule is full and you're only considering more ECs to boost your college app, keep in mind that most colleges in the country don't pay attention to ECs when it comes to admission. The main colleges that do are places like HPYS because they have such an overabundance of high stat applicants that they can afford to select students based on creating a diverse campus in all meanings of the word.

Otherwise, the colleges that do pay attention to ECs tend to do so for merit aid, not for admissions.

Meanwhile, the best way to have your ECs stand out is to do ECs that you enjoy, and do those with depth. It's the extent of your commitment --projects your organized, etc. -- that impresses colleges, not the length of your EC list.

You can find plenty of posts about this subject if you use the search function. Also look at the EC thread pinned at the top of the chances board.

my friend only has like 1 EC, and that's a sport (gonna be varsity senior yr)

does this have a adverse effect on him if he applied to state schools (UCs)?
