Some number pushing

I know there was a thread about this previously however i couldnt find it.

I ganked these numbers off the academy’s website for the class of 2009 (my first year applying). Obviously these numbers are different year to year but i assume the trends are the same.

Applicants - 9601: these are the people who went online and said they want to apply to the academy and filled out the online (or mail) PCQ, right?

Candidate Pool: Are these people who received a nomination or just passed the PCQ? Ive heard that if you pass the PCQ but no nomination yet you are “Tentivie candidate”, with a nomination and pass PCQ you become “Official Candidate”.

Qualified Candidate: What classifies qualified candidate? I assume that includes a Nomination and medical, but if you meet all the minimum acceptance scores are you a qualified candidate?

If there are 1746 offers of appointments and only 1390…did ALL of those people reject their appointment (for what ever reason)?

Im supprised that only 47% of the class was PPQ. I know that this class was much larger than previous classes (1390 as opposed to 11-1200).

Also 15.5% athletes - are those recruited athletes?

My ACT scores are right on the money there but my SATs have a wider range. I have a 680 Math which is above average and a 590 Verbal which is way below average. Hopefully i can get some better prep for the Verbal and raise it a few points before march. It worked on my math (raised from 580 to 680) so hopefully i can do the same for verbal. Even if my math grade is lower, they should still accept my highest math score (680).

I know this is all really pointless but right now my mind is in like 6th gear and everthing, with all LOAs and nominations being sent out and i still havent heard anything… I think im starting to go crazy. Yeah thats it.
Thanks again for everyone here who has helped me with honest advice and support…it means alot.

Class of 2009 Profile

Here is the profile for the Class of 2009:

Applicants –9601

Average SAT Math – 658

"If there are 1746 offers of appointments and only 1390...did ALL of those people reject their appointment (for what ever reason)?"

Yes, but there's usually even more that reject it. My class is huge not because they sent out more appointments than usual, but because more of those appointed actually accepted their appointments. It's not that surprising, considering that if you can get into the Academy you probably have a lot of other options open to you as well.

"Potential Pilot Qualified – 47%"

This really is strange and very surprising to me. Almost everyone in my class wants to fly. In an average classroom of maybe twenty four-degrees, all but 1 or 2 will raise their hands if asked who wants to fly (and this is a common question here, I've observed the same trend countless times). This is normal for a four-degree class and usually the numbers decrease to about 50% as graduation gets closer. But if we're already at 47% PPQ, then there must be a lot of blissfully unaware cadets in my class.

Applicants –9601
Candidate Pool – 6809
Qualified Candidates – 1928

What separates those categories?
Applicants are people who open an admission file, right?
How are the candidate pool and qualified candidates different?

i got my appointment, in the class of 2010, i will not be in the percentage of PPQ, i am potential navigator qualified O_O

didnt' know the SAT scores, thanks for posting, hooray, i was well above avg on both! :) surprising....i thought they'd be higher, especially math.

I have some numbers that I just became aware of.

My ALO just called me kind of worried and asked me how I felt I did on my CFA. I told him I thought I did pretty well except a little lacking on pushups(45) and mile run(7:25) and B-ball throw(62 ft) but by no means failed anything. He told me that I was only 2 points above passing, not average, but just passing. I was stunned and so was he because I was above average on the other three events and maxed out the situps.

He thought that maybe my coach had filled out the form wrong or that the admissions had put in the wrong scores or mixed mine up with someone else's.

I really didn't know how to respond, I was kind of surprised and a little curious as to wether the test is purely pass/fail or if it made a difference wether they had me down as barely passing or passing with plenty of room to spare?

I've generally thought of it as this:
Applicants – Those who have completed the online application
Candidate Pool – Those who have sent in the full application package
Qualified Candidates – You meet their minimum standards and have a nomination
Offers of Admission – How many of the qualified candidates they can actually take (they estimate that a certain number of these will drop out)
Total Admitted – Final stage of course, lower because many people apply to all of the academies, accept other schools, get disqualified, etc.

The candidate instructions booklet and catalog talk about this a bit, but it still can be rather ambiguous.

texas falcon: your numbers seem alright, but maybe i'm wrong? i'm a girl and my scores were good for an loa, and got my appointment last week:

bball throw: 36 ( i know, bad)
pull ups: 2
sit ups: 61 (i think? took in october)\
push ups: 99 (yaay! hahah)
run: 8:36 (pathetic, i know, but it was 40 degrees, cold, and extremely windy.....but eh)

what are the guys' numbers?

My numbers (im a guy):
Pull ups-- 15
Push ups-- 71
Sit up-- 75
dont remeber shuttle
BBal throw-- I believe 65-70
Mile: 6:15

I figure I am close to a typical male applicant

Pull ups - 13
Push Ups: 65
Sit Ups: Mid 60s, dont remember.
Shuttle Run: 8.7 (i think)
BB throw- 68
Mile 6:58

Interesting...based on what I saw at summer seminar (some very un-fit people) I'm surprised at the passing level being that high.

Pull Ups-9
Push Ups-60ish (can't remember)
Sit Ups-90
Shuttle run-9.2
BB Throw-60
Mile- 5:19

My ALO said that they had probably made a mistake when entering the data or they mixed them with someone else's. Said it does happen sometime.

Pullups:10
Bball Throw: 62
Shuttle run: 9.2
Situps: 95
Pushups:45 (ouch, still not much below avg of 50)
Mile: 7:25

oh ,forgot shuttle run: 10.0

texas falcon: it only seems like your pushups are low...everything else looks fine.

Pullups: 17
Bball throw: 72'
Shuttle run: 9.4
Situps: 65
Pushups: 55
Mile: 7:00
LOA: N/A

Shuttle Run: 7.8
Push Ups: 75
Sit Ups: 95
B-Ball Throw: 85
Pull Ups: 11
Mile Run: 4:59
(I got an LOA)

pull-ups: 9
b-ball throw: 55 (terrible)
Shuttle run: 8.4
Sit-ups: 69
Push-ups: 41 (bad, but I do around 70 now)
mile: 7:48
No LOA

I really wish I could take it now, I could max out a couple and do a lot better on others. Bummer.

oh , forgot to mention: LOA, and got my appointment :) yay x 3284732974723456676

don't be too disheartened when you come to the academy and your numbers drop.... as in plumit...

2 factors.... altitude (although people say it doesn't really matter.. OOOhhh it matters... your first AFT... trust me you'leralize how much it matters)

another is, instead of having friendly gym teachers/coaches/ALO judging your physicals, you'll have Officers (during the school year) and cadre during BCT who judge your events hardcore

a week before BCT my scores were something like, 16 pull ups, 106 push ups mile 1/2 run 9 min....

2, 3 days into BCT we took a physical and my scores were 7 pull ups, 45 push ups, and 10:50 mile and 1/2

so just to let you guys know... even in you guys think your in pretty good shape, never hurts to over prepare

"...and cadre during BCT who judge your events hardcore"

Yeah. I was one of those people. Counting pushups for the 1st BCT PFT. But it was to break everyone in to how things run at the Academy. The officers during the school year PFTs are sometimes even stricter, and those scores actually count (as opposed to the ones in BCT that get recorded but not used for anything long term).
