Let me introduce myself.
My name is Kyle.
I live in Illinois (North of Chicago) and am 18 years old.
I am applying to both the Naval and Air Force academies for the class of 2010.
Unfortunantly I did not recieve on nomination to Navy from my representative (Kirk) and I also missed the deadline for nomination to one of my senators.
I am still waiting for word from my other senator (Obama) to see if I will get a nomination for Air Force.

I was wondering what my chances are of getting a nomination and/or an LOA?

I have 4 Varsity Letters in Cross Country and Track and am also 4-time all-academic.
I have spent a decade in the Boy Scouting program and I am an Eagle Scout and OA member.
I am a member of the National Honor Society.
Over the years I have done a fair amount of Volunteer work.
My GPA is 4.6(weighted) out of 5 (no class rank) on a tough schedule.
I have taken mostly honors and AP classes (will have take 7 AP classes by end of this year).
My ACT is 31 (Math-34, Science-33, Reading-31, English-26)

I am PCQ.
I did okay on the CFA and I consider myself in decent shape.

When I first started the process, the feeling I got from my BGO and ALO is that I wouldnt have alot of trouble getting in, but now I dont think I can.

Hmm, looking at your stats, you look like a strong candidate to me. Remember this, just because you haven't gotten an LOA does not in any way mean you wont get in. Only roughly 200 people recieve LOA's every year, and everyone else hears much later than that. Don't lose hope yet, you've still got a long way until you'd be disqualified/Not admitted.

Welcome Kyle...hey, has anyone noticed how crazy this board has been lately? People are posting left and right, new members, LOAs floating in, yada yada yada...we certainly have some activity around here! Maybe our post totals can someday compete with those other Academies' forums...just a bit of friendly competition, of course ;)

Anyways, you look like a strong canidate...like Patriot said, don't judge yourself by having an LOA...you probably have a great chance at regular admissions, or may have an LOA in the mail, who knows? But how is everything with your ALO? The ALO interview is an integral part of the whole admissions process...a good ALO interview could make or break your chances. Whatevers good, its nice to see you here Kyle, and anyone else lurking out there, just chilling and not posting, come and join.....

Well, I would say I have a good relationship with my ALO. To be honest, I think my BGO liked me much better, but I am leaning towards Air Force now.

Just assuming that I dont get a nomination, are my chances of going to Air Force zero?

Did you apply for a vice presidential nomination. If you don't get a nom from a congressman your chances are probably preety high for the vice pres. one.

Overall you look like a strong canidate. Hang in there.

If you don't get a nomination at all, ever, than your chances are literally zero, you can't get an appointment w/o a nomination. You've still got time though, Nominations for MOC's don't have to be in until Late January, and the VP noms come out in March I believe. Did you apply for one through your Congressman? If not, just see how this other senator turns out, and if that doesn't happen, theres always the possibility of the VP.

kyle where do you live? i got my nomination from Congressman Kirk for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy last year, and I'm from Glencoe if you know where that is

i dont know how its done at USAFA but for west point, there is a national waiting list for kids w/o nominations. after all of the appoinments w/ nominations are filled, they go to the waiting list to fill in people till they reach 1200 kids. the letter i received from WP said a few hundred cadetships are filled from that list each year. i would assume USAFA does something similar to this. contact ur ALO/BGO.

Was there a reason you didnt get a nomination from your congressman? Generally most people get their nominations from that source. More competitive people get theirs from senators. Reason for this is congressmen are open to their district while senators are ENTIRE state. Now you look pretty damn competitive (i say you have a great chance) which makes me wounder why you didnt get one from you congressman.

I agree with you, snipper.
I though the same thing. I am going to call up the people for my congressman, just because I'm curious as to why I didnt get a nomination.

Did you have an interview with obama's people? Noone has heard from durbin yet (Apparently rumour has it he doesnt do interviews). I heard from durbin around this time last year, as well as my rep (who gave me nom last year). Fitgerald (now obama) did it back in november so Obama didnt follow THOSE footsteps.

You may have gotten one from Obama then. I know here in Texas they make sure not to duplicate nominations, I got a Senatorial, so my Congressman said I can't get theirs.

My congressman's secretary i should have my nomination by end of the week. I dont know if the ill senators communicate so not to duplicate nominations. Supposedly you look better if you have multiple nominations so that could put us (and other similar states at a disadvantage).

I say we give durbin and obama a switch kick in the rear end. But it could be possible they are waiting on our congressmen. Like i said, i heard from durbin (reject) the same day i got my nomination from my congressman... dunno

Really? My congressman's was sent out hte thirteenth as well, but thats only a few towns away (addison, im from glen ellyn/wheaton). Wounder if durbins will reach us tomorrrow... Like i said last year durbins and my reps came same day.

Now we just need to slap obama... October 14th and its the 16th of december already! WAKE UP NEWBIE SENATOR! :-P heh...just gotta poke fun at the guy.

Well, good news I guess, I just got a call from the person for my congressman and he said they were sorry that they could not get me a nomination for Navy, but they might be able to get me one for Air Force. He said that Air Force is "interested in me." Crosses fingers for LOA

It is not a sure thing yet, but it is a move in the right direction. Maybe I will be joining you guys in Colorado Springs next year after all.
