some Qs..

here i have some questions hoping somebody to answer for me..heee
1. do we have to bring the 3books they sent us??
2. has anybody received the new class listing yet?
3. do we supposed to bring a internet cable? (what kind?)
4. Is the ASSU card useful? i paid $45 for it,,
thank you for reading and we only have about a week to go!!

and here are some answers :):
1)No you don't really have to bring them (what 3 books where they this year btw?) you won't really need them.

2)Do you mean the bulletin? Just go to bulletin.stanford.edu to check out the classes.

3)You just need a LAN cable to connect your laptop/pc (wireless is also available in all dorms I think...)

4)Do you mean your ID card? I remember being asked if I wanted to put any money in it. You get Cardinal Dollars which are pretty useful. You can print with them (.1$ a page), buy from Treehouse,TresEx,Bookstore (I think!) and so on.

No, but you might as well. Don't feel, however, as though you need to read any of them, much less all of them, despite what they tell you.

Check bulletin.stanford.edu for the new 07-08 version. You'll also get one when you arrive on campus and you'll have plenty of time to select your classes then.

You can bring one or buy one at the bookstore, at about a 300% markup, of course. You don't technically "need" one, but when you're plugged in you'll probably get a faster connection that way.

I think the OP was referring to the discount card, and, as far as I can tell, it is completely, utterly and totally useless. Don't feel bad though, I bought it as well.

thank you guys for replying..
for #2,i am referring to the stanford introductory seminars course catalogue/don'twe supposed to get them by mail?
for the card,,ha ha ..OK,,45 bucks..but don't they give you discount? they listed some places i might go, so I just bought the card.:D oh well..

You'll probably find the brochures in question in your PO Box when you first check it upon arriving at school. If you can't stand to wait that long, you can look up that info online. Just search for it on stanford.edu.

Well it hasn't come out yet but it should be up very soon on this page (<a href="http://ual.stanford.edu/OO/intro_seminars/IntroSemsCurrent.html)%5B/url%5D">http://ual.stanford.edu/OO/intro_seminars/IntroSemsCurrent.html)</a>. Plus if you really want to find out download the bulletin. It actually has all the introsems for this year (there are almost always a few adds and subtracts every quarter but still)

Has anyone started writing their introsem applications? They're not up yet, but they're due on 9/21 and with all the NSO fun we'll be having do you think there'll be enough time to write 3 decent apps?

Thanks! :) Soooo excited for NSO by the way. :D

Wow ROCKao you're wayy more motivated then I was. I didn't start writing my applications until the very last minute and they were pretty bad ones too. Luckily I got into a pretty nice introsem (Science in the News) which is also offered this year.

haha I haven't started yet...:) Just a little anxious to because I'm leaving day after tomorrow for the states, and want to get as many things out of the way as possible before having fun. :D I was actually considering applying for Science in the News! Sounds really interesting. :)

Does anyone know anything about "Translations" taught by Prof. Martin Kay?

is "Science in the news" a lot of work...are there papers, exams, etc. or is a relatively "everyone gets an A" course? jst wondering bc i already have a heavy course load with physics 60 n'all.

^Magerie Science in the News wasn't a lot of work at all. You have no papers no exams only one presentation (it'll take a bit of time to make but its only once) and class participation. It is definitely one of the easiest As I've gotten at Stanford.

One note: Internet cables are required when initially connecting to the network. So technically you and your roommate could share one if one of you would be happy with just wireless. But come on, they cost like, $5, so save your RCC some trouble and just get one. :-)

thanks people
anybody know about Ethnographies of North America by Michael Wilcox and Digital Dilemma by David L. Dill?? how are these two introsems??

digital dilemma its on one of these threads but it says no midterms or final just participation n'stuff

anyone know of Naturally Dangerous with COllman

How hard is it to get into "Hacking Stuff"? I imagine it's pretty popular.

Naturally Dangerous, I heard, was not so hot. Oh, and Professor Collman doesn't believe in global warming. Did I mention he's rather bitter?

Naturally Dangerous is definitely not the best experience for an introsem. I took it and I'd say...pass on it.
