Some Questions About UC Health Insurance.

Greetings all,

I had a few questions about the HEALTH INSURANCE, I was hoping somebody can shed some light upon it. I currently work so I have my insurance, but I am going to leave work soon, and plus, my health insurance was GAR BAJ and will need insurance(going to do all 3, health, vision and dental). I am currently on the UCOP website for UCLA(Link below). So, a couple questions I had were, one of the options says, "Registered Students", it will be nearly 600 per quarter for all 3. Does that mean, I have to wait till I register for my courses? The other is Voluntary Students. Not sure what that is, but coverage will be nearly 1k per quarter.

http://www.ucop.edu/ucship/campuses/los-angeles/ucla-enroll.html

Second question, where do I enroll? I looked around, I did not see anything. Only thing I saw was, Dependents of registered students enrolled in UC SHIP. And finally, when does the insurance kick in? I am tired of my crappy insurance. Oh sorry, 1 last question, is the insurance PPO? Health and DENTAL.

Thank you in advance.

It’s definitely not PPO!
I have question about it too…If I have Medical, do I still need to get the UC Insurance?

I believe if you have “comparable insurance” then you do a waiver. What comparable is, I don’t know.

Dental is PPO though, that is at least good.

Good question as I am paying my daughter’s insurance through our family plan.

Here is what I just found out online at UC:

"Health Insurance is mandatory for all UCLA registered students and a condition of enrollment. The UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) is a comprehensive medical insurance program offered to UCLA students. All registered students are automatically enrolled in UC SHIP, but if you have comparable insurance and you do not want to keep UC SHIP as dual coverage, you must submit a request to waive enrollment by the specified deadline. "

Yes, I read that as well. I am all for changing my insurance, I have the worse of the worse insurance, LA Care. I use to have Kaiser’s insurance(Which was amazing), but I changed jobs and I got stuck with this. I have tried to call them(Ashe Center) a few times, but get sent place to place. And, I was looking, it appears the health insurance just may in fact be PPO.

But I also see this…

3 different tiers on their site.

The new medical plan includes a 3-tier structure:
1st Tier: Ashe Student Health Center and UC Family Medical Centers (UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSF, UCD)
No deductible
10% CO-INSURANCE by the student or copayment for certain services ($15 specialist visits at UC Family, $15 physical or occupational therapy)
$2,000 annual Out-of-Pocket Maximum

2nd Tier: Anthem Network Providers
$300 deductible
20% co-insurance by the student or copayment for certain services ($40 specialist visit, $40 physical or occupational therapy)
$3,000 annual Out-of-Pocket Maximum

3rd Tier: Out-of-Network Providers

You’d think they would make it a bit more simplified. I get the 3rd tier, but 1st and 2nd I guess are UCLA insurance or going with Anthem? I don’t know, I will try calling them again later today.

All I want to know is where, where do I sign up, or does it automatically enroll you in, and when does it enroll you in?

If it’s PPO I will kill myself!!! I recently had a deviated septum surgery, and I paid out of pocket since my ■■■■■■ insurance was not PPO and I only had one doctor I wanted to do the procedure with. I could have waited to enroll in UCI and then do the surgery!! Deviated septum is completely covered by insurance companies.

Here are the dates.

Note this is for UCLA, assuming the same dates are for the other UC’s.
http://www.studenthealth.ucla.edu/FormsDocuments/2014-15%20UC%20SHIP%20Coverage%20Dates.pdf

I’d just like to get a clarification for these tiers as well as where do I pay???!!

I don’t know what you guys will end up with but it probably will be PPO but with UCLA you’ll have access to the best hospital and clinics in the world. UCLA Medical just rated #5 in country. Even the Arthur Ashe facility I can’t imagine it will not be good.

I’m waiting for this insurance to start, I have awful California insurance. I need knee surgery.

On the topic of insurance, have any of you thought about renter’s insurance? It covers loss or damage of computers, phones, TVs, game players, etc. There are a lot of thefts at UCLA. After searching around, I think the best is NSSI. You can get coverage for about $100-$140 a year and the good thing is, unlike other insurance co that replace with money based on current value (i.e. your three year old computer is now worth $175), they will replace with the same model and if that model is no longer in production, will find a comparable current model. (This is what I hear, anyway.)
