And I got a 3 :(

If I were to take the test again this year (with more studying), will colleges just ignore my first score? Will that lower my AP test score average?

Thanks!

I don’t know if colleges ignore scores if you retake the exam but it does affect your AP test score average if you’re aiming to be a AP Scholar. That said, it is possible to cancel your AP score for free if you call Collegeboard.

1) Colleges don’t weigh AP scores that heavily in admissions. I had the same notion in sophomore year, but this site taught me a lot.
2) NEVER retake an AP exam. They’re not like the SAT in that they’re $86 each and they’re a ***** to study for the first time around. You will most likely forget everything especially with all the new info you will be taking in sophomore year.
3) Don’t worry about your 3. Most freshmen don’t do well (and a 3 isn’t bad) so you seem to be on the right track to perform well in the years that actually matter.

the importance of AP tests are extremely overrated. Sort of like how the PSAT is for NMS, AP tests are for the sole purpose of college credit. Other than showing the rigor of your schedule, they have little (or no) bearing in the admissions process. And besides, you passed as a freshman. Even to get a 5 on the retake would still be a waste of $86. Focus on your upcoming AP classes/tests.

I would like to point out to the above two posters that the cost of AP tests has risen again this year and that they now cost $87. That is all.

Well, I’ve heard from several people that being able to self-study a decently difficult AP and scoring a 4 or preferably a 5 on it’s a pretty decent accomplishment on your app. It won’t be like getting a perfect SAT score or anything, but it shows your devoted, and is especially recommended for people whose school’s activities and/or AP classes are lacking (especially now with many school budget cuts).

World history’s not the hardest AP to self-study, but it’s definitely not the easiest at all AP to self-study. If you do retake it and score well on it, I’d like to say it’d carry some weight on your app. Though I wouldn’t recommend doing it in lieu of an actual club position or losing volunteer hours.
