Hi. I'm sort of scared and need some overachievers to just tell me something about my situation.

Backstory: West side living on the streets yo- no, I have a comfortable life but during my middle school years I was a bad child for who knows what reasons. Any who, I've changed, I've surrounded myself with good people, smart people. And I want to be with those people. Came into freshman year with a 3.1 WEIGHTED GPA (my district system has no cap on the weighted GPA, it uses the 4.0 system and then adds the honors and AP points). Worked for an entire year and then ended with a 4.55. Leaps and bounds for me.

Now as a sophomore I'm choosing my classes. 3 APs I have to take, there is no other options. And then I have 3 others. So my question is, will I make it? Will I have to study like crazy? Anyone take these classes and get success?

I have done my research on this forum but I want to get a jist of what people think of my schedule.

Schedule:

Through School:
AP Calc BC
AP Chem
AP World
AP Government/Macroeconomics
English II
Spanish III
Magnet Class
Magnet Class

FLVS:
AP Computer SCience
Applied OOP Java

So in total that's 11 classes, 6 AP tests, and I'm hoping summer never ends!

So, will I make it?

At first glance, I thought your user name was SleepLover, and I thought - there won’t be much of that!

God, I already mapped out what my life would be like with EC’s and it looks like I’m giving up lunch, mornings, and praying for a schedule that allows me to study in school in easy classes

How many AP classes did you take freshman year? And what were your AP Exam scores? If you haven’t taken AP classes before personally I would say don’t load up and take 6 because AP classes are time consuming and you still need to save time to do EC and other things with your life. But if you think you can handle it then to each their own.

@tola2015
I took AP HG and got a 5 and then I also studied so much biology I probably could’ve self-studied a 5 (biology is one of my best subjects).

For my EC’s I do a few major ones (that are extremely time consuming, about 4).
I can always drop the half-credits but I really want the extra weightage :\ (crazy)

If you plan on keeping the schedule you have above do you have a plan on how you are going to manage your time while still keeping the same ECs?

@tola2015

My most demanding EC is Swim Team. During the swim season I have practice that physically destroys. Thankfully its during that beginning period of school so hopefully I can manage all the primers in the classes.

FBLA (business thing) is going to hopefully be okay. The “test” I do for it will be mostly what I learn in my magnet classes.

Robotics I’m a programmer and I slowly take on more demanding roles but this I have a lot of free time to spend studying

And I guess and new EC’s that I try will be mostly passive just in them for the point of saying I’m in them.

You shouldn’t do an EC just so you can put it on your app; you should do them because you are passionate about that particular activity and want to be an ACTIVE member. And if you have a schedule like this do you ever plan on sleeping?? And you might have to change your sleeping habits. Last year I had a “strange” sleeping pattern (I didn’t find it strange) and it worked for me and I was able to stay on top of everything (last year I had 4 APs 2 Honors and Spanish 3)

If you go through with it try not to be one of those people who only gets 3 hours of sleep a day because you will be TIRED and hopefully you won’t turn into one of those irritating people who complains at school about how hard their schedule and how they never sleep when no one forced them to take the classes.

@tola2015
The 3 EC’s I talked about are my favorite ones that I actually enjoy doing, there are other ones I do just because of the people in them (my friends push me with their achievements)

Sleeping is going to be a problem unless I can budget my time in school better. Waking up early to do my studying and in school extra studying. But I’ll have to hope for the best I guess.

I really want to know the rigor of the classes I’m taking. If I can handle this year’s course load then I know I’m ready for a harder junior year.

And I’m trying not to think about school 24/7 but whenever I have free time I’m already studying for some classes

I can only speak for AP chem because AP Calc BC, AP Gov, AP Econ are on my schedule for this year. AP chem wasn’t that bad but at my school our teacher got a C in his AP Chem class (because he believed he was smarter than his teacher) so I made powerpoints for each chapter and then emailed it to classmates and then the class was pretty easy. I found the MC on the AP exam to be easy but the FRQ were time consuming and you really have to work fast.

As for AP world and AP computer Science I would look through CC threads and see what others had to say about the class difficulty

What I did last year (because my house is loud in the afternoons and if everyone is awake I’ll be tempted to talk to someone) was come home from school/track, eat, take a shower, look at the time add 15 minutes (because that’s how long it’ll take me to fall asleep) then add 5-6 hours from that time and then wake up sometime between 11pm-12am then do homework. I found that when I gave myself a time limit to have to have every assignment done before school started it was much easier to accomplish and since everyone was asleep I basically had the house to myself. This year I have 7 AP and 2 Honors classes and I’m going to do basically the same thing.

@tola2015 crazy stuff man, 7 APs. AP Chem is going to be a challenge that I need to conquer, It is definitely the hardest AP in our school aside from APUSH.

I actually loved APUSH (best class ever) my teacher was great.

Well one of my APs for next year is AP Stats and everyone says that class isn’t hard and doesn’t require a lot of at home studying so it shouldn’t be that bad.

Kids focus too much on the number of AP classes. You have to look at that in the context of your whole schedule–all that really matters is how much time you have. I don’t think taking 6 APs would be a problem for a top hardworking student, even with many of the harder ones as you have in your plan, but I think taking them as part of a 10 class schedule is a bad idea, especially considering you have some time consuming ECs. I’m not necessarily objecting to the number of APs, just the total number of classes. But perhaps I misunderstood something–I don’t know what “Magnet class” is, or why that is two entire full courses. And why do you need to take a second computer class along with AP CS? Does that even make sense?

What did your parents say about this? What did your counselor say? Is this the type of schedule that top students usually take at your school? It just looks like too many classes to me. And why do you feel you have to rush through all this as a sophomore? What classes would you take next year?

I was joking.

Seriously though, if you aren’t getting 8 hours of sleep most nights you are potentially permanently damaging your cognitive functioning. Google “Teen Sleep Deprivation” to find more detailed studies. Your brain is developing and you need to treat it right.

Google that now before the semester starts, because you won’t have time to Google it later. (Back to a little joking).

@ClassicRockerDad. I guess he won’t be counting very many sheep once school starts back up LOL

Anyway, next year means NO procrastination whatsoever. Go to somewhere public because your chances of procrastinating are much lower.

I did like the exact same thing as a sophomore and it was fine

@mathyone
I’m really well rounded in Java and the two classes I want to take on FLVS interest me which is why I’m taking them.

I’m not trying to overload on AP classes and was looking around for how people handled having some of these class combinations.

Oh and the magnet classes are part of our school. They are basically computer science courses such as networking.

Oh and my counselor urged me to take the AP macro/gov. Calc,chem,world I’ll have to take because there is nothing else for me to take (other than the honors classes for world but nah)

@ClassicRockerDad
And looks like I’ll be needing to budget my time even harder. Discipline is what will save I guess in the end.

@SheepLover
When I did essentially the same thing as you, I found the most helpful thing was that there was overlap between the courses; I’d apply things from each subject in the other to further review and understand concepts while lowering the overall time spent. However, with a normal level of procrastination and high school like behavior, I found myself getting around 5 hours or less of sleep each day. Budget your time.

@Apollo11
Good idea actually… I’ll try this. To organize my notes (and to make my life not a constant grind), I’ve started using OneNote and it’s amazing for note taking, so hopefully I’ll just study whenever I’m doing something and I’ll cut down on study time for tests.

It might also be a good idea to carry around my nexus, I’ll be able to read some of the textbook in class.
