Sophomore - 4 or 5 APs?

Long story short, I'm dropping AP Physics B because that class is too hard for me (school will make it say Physics Honors on my transcript). I'm getting a C for the semester.

I have an option to take 4 or 5 AP classes next semester. The 4 are Lang, Calc AB, US Gov, and Human Geo (all of these are easy classes, just a lot of work; physics on the other hand is hard + a ton of work). If I were to take a 5th, it would be AP Micro or AP Macro. I really just want to take it easy and take debate or something easy, but that wouldn't be taking the most rigorous schedule offered to me.

What should I do?

At my school, the sophomores can only take 1 AP class: AP World History. If you’re interested in taking these classes, go ahead. But remember don’t just take AP’s so it’ll look good on apps and on your transcript. Also if you say their easy go ahead, and if you’re interested in Economics go ahead and take AP Macro or Micro

I say go for it,if you think you can handle it…it does get hard around april, but you should be able to pull through. I’m speaking from personal experience here, because I took 4 ap’s as a sophomore, and it wasnt too bad.

Debate is something easy?

^ the class, yes

Is AP gov and AP econ every other day? If so, add econ (one of them, whichever interests you more- micro is more mathematical)

Lang: easiest class ever

Calc AB: it’s pretty easy for me; only reason why I have a B is because I procrastinated studying for the tests :/

US Gov: class is a joke

Human Geo: interesting, lots of reading and writing

^ Yes, we are on a block schedule with Calc everyday. I guess I’ll do micro since math usually comes easy to me.

What worries me is the amount of homework. This semester was a disaster with physics. I didn’t have time for anything. I had to give up debate (not class but the actual EC), most of my volunteering Sundays in order to study for physics, and even with all that I’m still probably going to get a C for the semester. I don’t want something like that to happen again. I want to have time for tennis in the spring and my other ECs.

Is AP Micro difficult? Lots of homework? If it is, I’m just going to forget trying to raise my HPA this semester, take college classes in the summer, and take Debate II or some other easy semester class.

it’s just sophomore year, don’t stress about AP classes yet. take a couple easy ones if you like, but you have two more full years that you can spend doing work for AP’s.

Are AP classes all semester long for you?

@ljn3110: The thing is, I go to an extremely competitive, nationally ranked high school. Almost EVERYONE in my grade is smart. Meaning, if we were all to go to different, “normal” high schools, everyone would be in top 20 at least. I say this because I’m very concerned about my rank. I need to be at least top 20 at my competitive high school. (Can’t wait to find out my rank in January!)

The other thing is that I’m doing IB, but those are weighted the same as APs at my school. But I’d like to have a mix of AP and IB classes.

@bobtheboy: AP classes are all year except AP Micro and AP Macro. Those are semester long classes.

Bluedevil18: Easy or not, the AP economics are going to be compressed into one semester which has to mean double the work compared to a full year course. I would think that translates into double the amount of time you need to spend on that course.

wirefox, AP econ is meant to be a semester course. That’s why at my school, we take it every other day, since doing it for a semester wouldn’t work with the exam in may. it’s not double work.
