sophomore GPA

I’m a junior in highschool but my sophomore yr gpa was a 3.1. Will I be able to raise my gpa high enough my last two years for colleges like , Nyu, Usc, and Ucla? Also any other tips to get into those type colleges would be great! CO’22

I can only talk about UCLA. UCLA like all UC’s only use 10-11th grades for the a-g course requirements in their GPA calculation. You get an extra honors point for each semester of UC approved Honors, AP, IB or DE courses taken during this time.

Even if you get all A’s Junior year, your GPA would only be around a 3.5 (unweighted). Anything under a 3.8 unweighted GPA, would make UCLA a Reach school.

I would concentrate on working hard and doing the best that you can do Junior year. Once you have completed Junior year, calculate your UC GPA and see where you stand.

There are so many great schools to consider, so do not try to make your stats fit a school, find a school(s) that fit your stats.

Some UCLA admitted students stats below:

GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students:
Unweighted HS GPA: 3.91-4.00
UC Capped weighted GPA: 18 - 4.32
UC Fully weighted GPA: 4.37-4.63

Learning to calculate a GPA, including assumptions on future grades, and findinf/navigating/understanding the CDS of Colleges of interest would be a beneficial skill in a college search.

As well as the idiosyncratic California system(s), if interested in them.

Fwiw, GPA usually also includes Freshman year.
