Sophomore Housing?

My son is a freshman housed in a South Quad triple. He'd like to move to a different room next year.

I wondered what experience current U of M students had in getting the housing of their choice (on-campus) in their sophomore year. He'd like to go to Mosher-Jordan or a single in South or West Quad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First there is a returning student lottery, and then a campus-wide lottery.

People who are currently living in a dorm and want to stay there get top priority. You sign up either by yourself, or with a roommate (roommates if you want to get a triple/quad). Then each person/group gets assigned a lottery number, and then on some day in I think February, people/groups sign up for housing in that order. If you sign up by yourself and there are no singles available, you can either sign up for a double/triple and get a blindly assigned roommate, or you can just not sign up for housing in that dorm.

After each dorm does their returning student lottery, people who want to switch dorms can sign up for a campus-wide lottery, and it runs in pretty much the same fashion.

Honors has it's own set of rooms in South Quad reserved, so if your son is in Honors he would have the option of trying to get a South Quad single during the Honors lottery (which is before South Quad returning lottery). If he doesn't get one there (or isn't in Honors), then you can try the returning student lottery. If you can't get a single there and don't want to go blind in a south quad double, then you can go for the campus-wide lottery probably get a room in Mojo (I doubt many singles make it to the campus-wide lottery).

Also, from housing website:
Housing Sign-up Procedures
If you currently live in a residence hall and want to live in a residence hall again next year, information will be available in December regarding Housing Sign-Up procedures, guidelines, and schedule.

If your son is in SQ, he can participate in the "same hall" lottery -- and have priority over students living in other halls. If he's lucky, and gets a good lottery number, then he might be able to get a single in SQ. There aren't that many in SQ. However, there are a lot of singles on campus--and if he has a decent lottery number, he would have a good shot at a single in another hall. On central campus, East and Couzens have a lot of singles. Couzens has an Honors community - and it's close to the new dining center. Cambridge is mostly singles with private baths. There are a lot of sophomores who want doubles -- so it isn't necessarily the case that all of the singles go first.

"Cambridge is mostly singles with private baths"

Are there other dorms that have private baths as well? Are they maintained by the student or housekeeping?

I think Cambridge is the only one with private bathrooms, except for a VERY select few rooms in certain dorms which are reserved for handicapped students, and quickly snatched by returning students if they aren't being used. Most of the dorms in Baits have bathrooms that are only shared by a handful of people, and like the private bathrooms, are maintained by the residents instead of the staff.

Except for Cambridge, very few rooms with private baths. Northwood apartments, of course, have private baths.

Thank you for your help.

FYI

I received an email from the University Housing Assignment Coordinator in response to a question. Her response stated, in part"

"The housing sign up process is being revised. Since the system is changing I cannot tell how it will impact the ability to select a room..."

So somethings changing. If you go to the Housing website and click on "2007-08 reapplication" you get a dead web page. I wonder what's changing??
