I'm entering with 68 AP credits and 12 transfer credits. Does this mean I'll be labeled a sophomore when I enter UCSD next year? And if so, what happens?

You’ll be sophomore standing in the system but you’ll still considered a freshman by everybody else. Otherwise nothing is different.

Does it change housing or priority for classes? And I will have the number of credits to be a junior by the end of the fall quarter. Do I become a junior right then or not until the next year?

“Standing” (i.e. freshman standing, sophomore standing, etc) is strictly determined by the number of units. The only thing that really changes is that if you want to enroll in a class that says junior or senior standing as a prerequisite, webreg won’t stop you if you have junior standing, even though you’re only a first or second year. It doesn’t change housing, but priority for classes is determined by the number of units. You might have an earlier enrollment time than other first years who came in with less units, but probably not by very much.

I had “sophomore standing” when I entered as a first year, and the only thing that was really different was that I had to ask for permission to enroll in a freshman seminar. I think you’re supposed to declare a major by a certain number of units (by the time you get junior standing), so if you haven’t declared a major yet, you might want to look into it.

There are plenty of people who are in the same situation as you. It’s not particularly special–it’s just the reason many people will ask what year you are, not if you are a freshman or sophomore because your “standing” doesn’t really mean anything.

^This .

The only time people really care about standing is when it’s time to enroll. The more units you have the earlier your time will be. At the beginning of college is when people still enjoy bragging about the # of ap courses they took or if they’re already sophomore standing.

Also, depending on your major (and copious summer school classes) you can graduate early.

Which I find almost as cool as bragging about how your big brother can beat up my big brother or that your Pokemon cards are better than mine… and the reality is my Pokemon cards are actually better. :)

I don’t know anyone who did this, but I suppose they wouldn’t want to be the sort of people I would want to be friends with anyway.
