Sorry to ask, but...

...I'm anxious about my chances of being accepted to UCLA, so I'd like to know what you guys think. My situation is a bit different than a lot of other people asking the same question, I think.

So, I have a 4.0 GPA, and I will complete my school's honors program by the end of the semester. I applied to UCLA as a political science major, and the problem is that my CC only offers ONE transferable major preparation course, so that's all that I will have completed (out of four, plus a stats class that assist.org tells me must be taken at UCLA).

Now, I've heard different things from different people. Some have told me that major prep. is very important, and that even with an excellent academic record, you'd probably get rejected in favor of someone with more prep. completed. Others have said that with a 4.0 and TAP, as long as I've taken all possible major prep. courses as offered by my CC, it shouldn't matter.

I've talked to students and people in the admissions department, but I can't seem to get an authoritative, decisive answer, so if anyone here knows anything about it, I'd appreciate it.

Rypken, if your school does not offer the various courses that are needed to fulfill your major requirements you will not be penalized. However, I have heard that many of the UC’s expect that their CC students will graduate more quickly and therefor create room for incoming students…they don’t want you to be there forever!
Having said that, I think your app. as you have stated in this post looks pretty good.
P.S. how were your essays?

Thanks for the input.

And, about my essays, I really don’t know how good they are, to be honest. I had two of my professors read them for me, and one said that they were probably better than most other applicants, but the other said they could have used some more revision (it was clear that he thought I could have done much better, but he never really said exactly how good he thought they’d be in relation to others). I probably didn’t put as much time into them as I should have, but I’d say they’re at least “good.” But I’m always really judgmental about everything I write, so I often have a hard time telling how good my writing actually is.

Bump. I’d be curious to know if anyone can confirm this or has something different to say.

kellico is right u wont be penalized if ur school doesnt have the courses. I would, however, suggest that u take other poli sci classes that ur school does have, or if possible take the classes u need at another CC.

Well, I am taking the only other poli sci course offered by my CC this semester, plus an independent study section for my internship with the local Congressman’s office that I have (which should be helpful too), but my transcript is still pretty light on the poli sci courses simply because my CC doesn’t offer many at all.

I did consider trying to take some at another CC, but the next closest one is three hours away, and they don’t offer a lot of the preparation courses anyways. I wonder if maybe I should make this known somewhere on my update form (I already told them on my application that I have taken all prep courses that are offered by my CC).

well dont wrry about it too much, its not ur fault ur CC doesnt have the classes, and the UCs know that, they wont penalize for it. as long as ur GPA/ECs/Essay are in range, ur fine.
