Sould I Call

Hey, I went to NASS this summer and fell in love with the academy. Physically I am in terrific shape and I maxed everything on the CFA. My grades are decent and I have been running to the mailbox everyday. Today is the last day stuff was supposed to come... right?? Should I call up there or is it better off to let it be?

It depends on what you think. Bad news seems to be the only thing that has been coming to many candidates.
You should email your Regional Director.

All final letters and appointments were mailed out as of April 15th. It may take a day or two for mail to arrive, so hold off on calls for at least a few days.

thanks yall, I’ll hold off on calling. I appreciate your help.

For those who were not accepted to NASS, please understand that this does not necessarily mean that you are not a competitive candidate for USNA. As I and others have said, NASS is primarily a recruiting tool. Thus, USNA seeks out candidates from high schools and/or geographic areas that have historically been underrepresented at USNA or where USNA hopes to have a greater presence. Thus, it is entirely possible that a lesser qualified candidate in such a situation would receive an NASS acceptance over a more qualified candidate from an area/school where USNA historically does very well.

If you want to go to USNA and were rejected from NASS, you should definitely still apply to USNA. I would suggest that you work closely with your BGO to determine if there are weaknesses in your “package” so that, in the next 6-8 months, you can address them. But, your package may be fine . . . it just may be a matter of location and numbers.

Also, please understand that attending NASS does NOT give you a huge, or even moderate, advantage in the USNA application process compared to those who do not attend. If you go and do well, you might get a SLIGHT bump over those who didn’t go. However, those who don’t go can easily make up for that with other things, such as being a military “brat,” an Eagle Scout, team captain, student government leader, doing very well on certain sections of the CFA, etc.

I want to reinforce what USNA1985 has said. My son was NOT accepted to NASS. When time to apply to USNA rolled around, he was hesitant, thinking he was not a desirable candidate. He chose to apply anyway and was offered an appointment to USNA early on in the process. He is finishing up his Plebe year and loves the Academy.

We will never know why he was not accepted to NASS. Please don’t think that your chances of attending USNA are over if you are not accepted to the summer session. Don’t assume anything. Trust that they have their reasons for doing things the way they do and apply anyway.

My son was also NOT accepted to NASS. He still completed his application, along with a NROTC application. Both were complete in August. Received a NROTC scholarship from the first board in September. Three Q’ed by the Academy in October. MOC nomination in December and appointed early March. He is a very determined and happy Plebe now!
