South Quad dorm Q&A

Hi, My D will be in South Quad starting fall. We are trying to do our dorm shopping and had a couple of questions. Do we need a
1. mirror?
2. lamp - something like this one? http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=14059849
3. is there room for an extra chair (comfortable)?
4. bed raisers? the housing website says the bed can be flip-flopped to be whatever height you like.

Thanks!

There is a small mirror in the room. It's the kind that opens up so that you could put things in, bathroom-style. Depending on the room, you'll get a sink with that mirror. I didn't :(

You should definitely get a desk lamp. Many people do have the kind of lamp displayed in the link above. It's nice to have (my roommate brought one) but not necessary. I would say a desk lamp is important, though.

Depends on your room. In a regular double, you will most likely have room for an extra chair. I had an economy triple. There was no room for anything else other than ourselves lol.

The rooms come with building block furniture (drawers, desk, ladder, bed set) that have a default position. However, you can set up the room any way you want it, as long as you put it back the way it was by the end of the year. In my economy triple, we just kept it the way it was because there was no room to shift things around. Things can be easily shifted in doubles. Regarding bed raisers, you don't need them.

The beds have one set of "feet" that are only a few inches long, and if you flip it then the other set of feet is about a foot and a half long. The mattress can rest on either side of the middle support. If you're doing a bunk bed, then you want the short feet down on the bottom bed, and the long legs sticking down from the top bed stack on the long legs sticking up from the bottom bed. This gives the person on the bottom bunk a reasonable amount of overhead clearance. If you have a normal bed setup, you want the long legs down so you have room underneath the bed.

If you loft, then the bed will be resting on top of the shelves that attach to the desks. You can either put the shorter feet directly on top of the shelves (giving you very little overhead clearance, but more space between your desk and dresser), or you can have the flat part of the bed rest on top of the shelves, which is what most people do when they loft in Squad. Also, if you loft, the beds have a side guard-rail that is the same height as the legs, but on the side instead of the ends of the bed. You need to make sure these are facing out when you loft (so you don't fall off in your sleep). Because of this, you probably want longer legs up so the long guard rail isn't blocking the entrance to underneath the bed.

It's all pretty easy to figure out once you get there (there should be a little pamplet in the room). Just make sure you have everything set up right first, because it's no fun having to take a loft down and rotate it because you forgot to have the guard rail facing out.

My friend at squad had a triple and they bought a beanbag chair for their room that didnt take up too much space..and you can just shove it in a corner/under a desk if you ever need more room.

Thaks all - that was helpful
