Space Bags vs. Suitcases

Hello hello, i see no one really mentioned this on here or if they did i haven't seen it yet, but i'm on way way to go to college this year and instead of lugging my clothes around like my sister going to pitt i'm going to use space bags!

does anyone agree that they actually help out with space?

They do. Absolutely. I would never have been able to get everything packed for my trip to school without them, would not have been able to bring home everything I needed to at Christmas break, and would not have been able to pack everything back up efficiently at the end of year either (three different packing constraints were involved). My parents were dubious at first, but they really aren't that expensive, so we figured it was worth trying and they definitely do work.

Edit: you can fit them into suitcases if you are going on a plane or just don't want them out in the open (the bags aren't super flimsy, but they also aren't the sturdiest things in the world so some protection might be prudent).

I just bought space bags to be sure we can fit everything in the car to drive D to school--but I'm concerned at the other end; to reuse them (you CAN reuse them, can't you?) you have to have a vacuum hose available, and I'm not sure there will be one available in the dorm.

Any thoughts on this?

There are different varieties out there, some of which just allow the user to manually squeeze out the air & don't require a vacuum. We bought one, "Packmate" and may be buying more of them, since hubby likes the one we purchased. Don't have much experience with these.

The vacuum ones are awesome but it sucks having to have a vacuum available (yes you can reuse them, but after awhile they kinda loose that vacuum). They would be a great help for when you move. The only thing that I hate is that they seem to wrinkle the stuff you put in.

The roll ones suck compared to the others. I only use them when I'm trying to save a little space and keep certain things together. I rather try to find a vacuum than have to roll each one (I often have to like sit/lay on them trying to get all the air out) because it would be much less hassle.

I also find that the vacuum bags lose the "vacuum" as well. I can't figure out how to keep that from happening. If anyone has any clues for making these work better, I would love to hear about it!

^As time goes by, everything looses its ability. There is no way to stop it from happening. If you are talking about how you vacuum it down and within a short amount of time, they loose their seal, you need to make sure that you have the zipper closed all the way and no leaks. I use to have a problem with the valve letting in air before I could close that flap thing, but I've just learned to be speedy quick. lol

There was a common vacuum for each floor in my dorm, so that's how I did it. I think I knew that before I went. As far as resusing the bags, I've done it two or three times now. I'm sure I'll have to get new ones soon, but they are pretty cheap (much cheaper than shipping prices!!!), so I'm not too bothered by the fact.

anyone notice that it seems much heavier after you have sucked all of the air out?

Of course it seems heavier--now instead of having all that weight spread out, it is in a smaller area.

I have used both the suck kind and the squeeze kind. I used the suck kind going to and from school, I was able to find someone in my dorm that had a hose vacuum. I used the squeeze kind for general traveling around. I thought they were dumb at first but now I can't live without them! I learned that it works good is you're packing the sucking ones into a suitcase or box that you put them in the suitcase first them suck them out so you can make them fit better.
