How are the Spanish and French departments and professors at Whitman? I'm especially interested in the quality of course offerings in the literatures as opposed to instruction in the languages. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Here are links to the course offering for both departments:
Spanish: http://www.whitman.edu/whitman/index.cfm?objectId=76CCE2DC-DBCF-B656-E1C107BAC082F2DB
French: http://www.whitman.edu/whitman/index.cfm?objectId=76CCE2B0-0F0A-8B5C-68F205AF42C1F082

I’ve generally heard good things about both departments, especially regarding the upper-level literature classes. I get the impression that the Spanish faculty are slightly stronger (and more numerous) and that the Spanish department offers a wider variety of classes, but I am less familiar with it than with the French department.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a prospective French major and took Advanced French last year, so I haven’t actually taken any lit courses, but I have had 2 of the French professors and am generally informed about the other profs in the department.

Hope that helps!
