Stanford 2021 Deferred Applicants Thread

So many really strong students from our school are getting waitlisted. It makes no sense. Is anyone else seeing this at their school?

@SinsOfAdmission I am seeing the same. Also, I am seeing some kids I thought would not get in, get admitted. But it’s hard to say unless you know their intended majors. Kids with near perfect academic credentials with NMF status getting denied from competitive majors. Most very strong (academically) students from my kids’ schools do manage to get accepted to all UCs other than UCB and UCLA. But many kids with let’s say 2000 SAT and 3.7 unweighted gpa are getting denied left and right from all UCs.

I think “UC” should stand for “Unbelievably Competitive” schools.

You got that right!

Guessing everyone here applied to at least a few ivies and/or Berkeley. This is how it went today for me:

Accepted: UPenn, Princeton, Columbia
Rejected: Harvard, UC Berkeley (EECS)

@schwhang That was hilarious!

Not a good day for me. rejected; harvard, princeton. waitlist; yale. Hopefully this isn’t foreshadowing tomorrow’s results.

Decisions out in less than 12 hours! This has been a long five months, Stanford was the first school I applied to and the last one I’m hearing back from. Fingers crossed, wish everyone the best! If I don’t get accepted I guess I’ll be #BerkeleyBound lol let the rivalry begin

Also was rejected from Harvard, Columbia, UPenn. Not too bummed about those though, since I was kinda expecting it and prepared myself

rejected from harvard, yale, brown, and upenn, waitlisted at columbia. waiting for my inevitable rejection from stanford haha

I can relate. Waitlisted at Brown, Wharton, Duke, Dartmouth, and UChicago. Accepted at Vandy tho. Hope this goes well for everyone!

wtf is life. I got in.

Denied, which hurts a bit more with the deferral, but I’ll be good at berkeley

In the big scheme of things I doubt going to UCB instead of Stanford would make any difference (because most programs at both schools are pretty high ranked) UNLESS you are from a certain income/asset level family who would receive a great financial aid from Stanford so that attending Stanford would cost less than attending UCB because UCB rarely gives any financial help.

I did hear that Stanford students are more collaborative, gets the benefit of grade inflation and receives more help from staff and alumni etc.

I got in! Can’t believe this

Accepted! Congratulations to everyone, regardless of if you got in or not.

@websensation I am one of those people that could’ve used financial help… I know I am better off than many families and I’m grateful, but let’s just say I have a twin sister planning to attend college at the same time and that 60k loan is quite unappealing.

The second part about what you said worries me a bit, am I going to face cut throat competition at Berkeley?

@jql2017 My wife and I spoke to many parents and kids who go to Berkeley. It’s definitely less collaborative and more competitive.

I also know a lot of berkeley students. With so many students, there is a lot of competition. However, you will basically be offered the same education at stanford, the only hard part is making yourself stand out with the info you are given. @jql2017

@websensation @wombat150 Oh I see. I might have to turn down berkeley anyway. I was just wondering if the education at berkley is worth the 63 coast of attendance, compared to University of rochester, which I can actually afford after grants and scholarships.

Denied. Accepted Berkeley and Brown though so it eases the sting a little.
