Stanford Class of 2017 RD Discussion

oh and I have to apply 3 Canadian universities because I was deferred from Chicago… I have no intention of matriculation whatsoever, but I had to promise it to my counselor in order to apply HPSM schools. yay, 3 more essays and one month of studies to go!

that sucks hatesmus.

yeah litotes I’ve pulled one this year. there was this hideously long, boring assignment that I REALLY didn’t want to do. we had like 3 weeks but I procrastinated until 2 AM the day it was due and then it took me til 7 AM to finish xD

i may have had a little senioritis first semester…

I might have to start pulling all-nighters this week. Our academic team’s going to compete in the Science Bowl and they stuck me with biology… so now, I’m painstakingly going through all the steps of the Krebs cycle.

sounds like most people are having stressful times. What really gives me stress is the veil of ignorance behind the admission process

I’m curious, what do you mean by “veil of ignorance”?

I countered the phrase ‘veil of ignorance’ the first time in a lecture where the professor discusses about creating a society with inequalities. Whether you would turn out to be the rich and powerful or the very opposite, no one does not know. I thought university admission was comparable to such for its lottery effect and random nature (to a certain degree). No one can project one’s admission result especially for schools competitive as Stanford’s.

yo guys lets chat moar i’m board wateing over hur.

haha, I was debating in the magnitude of Asian discrimination in Stanford thread. This guy doesn’t use logic but only using personal insults to me just because I’m an Asian and my name has ‘hate’ in it lol

He claims, because Asian is overrepresented in Stanford (33% in Stanford and 4% in U.S), Asians are in no disadvantage at all. I have no intention of complaining nor criticizing the affirmative action, but why can’t people just recognize the existence and move on?

@unicameral2013, were you the one who was accepted to MIT early? Then you should have no worries but expectation from March!

ahhh the affirmative action debates. I try to stay out of them, they NEVER get resolved.

haha yes that was me  but i’m still stressed! especially since Yale sent out the first round of likelies yesterday. i just want to have all my options so that i can move forward in my own decision making process!

lol you are so greedy! You are in much more comfortable state than I’m in because I didn’t get an acceptance in the early round. It is definitely good to have more options. I’m slightly more interested in MIT since MIT has an image of academic professionalism whereas Stanford seems to represent more well-rounded smart students in my country. I know Yale somehow has an aristocratic image. haha I think these images of top universities are mostly created by traditions, media and movies. For example, in the movie ‘21’, the math ‘genius’ is a MIT student. I’m sure all of them would be very bright and hardworking student but certain stereotypical images seem to be quite strong in my country.

So, I guess Stanford sends out likely letters, too?

Haha, like I’d even begin to get my hopes for that!

I heard the likely letters are mainly for athletes and very top applicants. I gave up hope for those because I’m not an athlete and my scores are not ridiculously high.

Nooooo I mean even if I’m going to get rejected to HYPS, which I probably am, I just want to know so I can move on! And knowing other people are already finding out freaks me out cause that means they already passed over my app once…

^I feel the same way haha

Eek. Apparently Yale sent out likely letters for some people already. Here we go I guess, haha.

HateSMUS, ha okay. Well, I definitely wasn’t expecting to get one anyways. Since I was deferred, they kinda already communicated to me that they aren’t dying to have me. Lawlz.

I noticed Uchicago sent likely letters already, too. yea it sucks to be deferred. I was deferred from UChicago. Were you deferred from Stanford?

Are mid-year reports heavily weighted?
