Stanford Class of 2017 RD Discussion

Two more essays left.

jesusbeafence

Idk I have like two main things that I try to say in each application, so Harvard and Yale were super easy cause I put one on the commonapp essay and the other on the free-choice supplement essay. I really like the short answers some schools have, like Princeton’s, they made me think a lot about myself.

I think I’ve really discovered who I am with all these applications! especially the longer ones like MIT and Stanford because I had to have something good to say about myself for every topic.

Don’t you guys feel discomforted by the Stanford essay character limit, especially for ‘what matters to you and why’ essay? I know when I was writing essay for Princeton, I thought 500 word limit was annoying because my story was quite long and I wanted to put details and what hardship and persecution I had to go through. For Stanford’s 2000 character limit, I could only fit 250~300 words which I didn’t like. So I had truncate lot of my hardship and part of the event in my story :(

I actually thought 2000 characters was the perfect amount of space.

Though, the physical space limitation cut off a joke in one of my essays cries

I liked the 2000 character limit as well! It allowed me to say what I needed to say without going overboard with details

Ha, yup! It’s so cruel, though…I’ll have these wild fantasies of a Stanford adcom laughing himself to tears over my essay, and then I’ll reread it in desperation at times like these, and it’s just like…what the heck have I written.

Application submitted! Good luck everyone!

I always think I have a good chance because I think my essays are amazing, then I reread them, and I’m like “Eh…”

^My feelings exactly.

Btw, I’m really having a lot of fun with this future roomie essay.

I had the most fun with that essay. The Common App cut off my last line, but it’s easily still by beat one. It offers good contrast with my other essays (which range from quirky to serious).

Right? My other essays were all super serious. In this one I can discuss my love for cats, libraries and K-pop, lol. ∩__∩

hey guys, so i just submitted, and i read the part of the instructions where it says that they strongly discourage kids from sending supplementary material. but i’ve already sent stuff in, so will that hurt me if they see i didn’t follow the instructions?

What type of supplementary material did you send in?

Is putting stuff in the additional information supplemental material?

As long as you didn’t dump a resume in there, it’s okay. If you only provided elaboration for a couple honors/ECs/unusual circumstances, that’s fine.

crap…i attached a resume in the additional info on my commonapp. the rest of the supplementary stuff was elaborating on some of my science accolades

Ah well. I doubt it’s going to wreck your chances. It’s not like you were actively trying to inundate them with your crap. They could just ignore the excess info instead of hating you for including it…I speculate.

They’d probably ignore it.

i really hope so, truly wasn’t trying to **** them off or anything. but thanks guys!
