Stanford Class of 2021 Applicant Discussion

Hello y’all intl applicant here from Italy. Can’t wait for the 15th, although I guess I have slim slim chances!

Hello all. I had a question concerning interviews. I’m from urban Chicago (which I figure to be heavily populated with alumni) yet haven’t received any interview offers. I really think it can help me!
Should I worry that I haven’t been contacted yet or is there still plenty of time? I know they say I won’t be at a disadvantage without an interview, but is this really the case?

hey guys do you know if we have to complete BOTH the fafsa and css profile?? or just the fafsa and not css?

@kbn2015 - if you are applying for financial aid, you have to file the CSS profile.

@TheLastofUs9 I’m intl too, in the same boat. Good luck

You have to complete both

@alr33zy As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, Stanford started interviewing only a few years ago. They’re up to about 25% of applicants. If you were Stanford, would you penalize the 75% who can’t get matched for an interview, through no fault of theirs?

@vasodys where are you from?
FAFSA and CSS have to be finished by when?

@TheLastofUs9 Cyprus :slight_smile:

@TheLastofUs9 FAFSA and CSS and IDOC must be completed by Midnight EST on November 15.

I just had my interview yesterday! It went for almost 2 hours and we talked about everything from baby animals to how the multiverse theory may or may not be BS. No resume or carefully rehearsed monologue necessary - just be prepared to gush together about how much you love the Farm :slight_smile:

From what my interviewer said, it sounds like Stanford (and most other colleges) conduct interviews as a way of confirming/validating the personality shown in your essays and recs. To that end, it’s not strictly necessary and can’t hurt you either way. Unless, of course, you REALLY mess up (i.e. start cussing out the election, try to convert them to your religion, or list 100 reasons why you would never leave your hometown). So just be a happy, palm tree-obsessed, well-groomed version of yourself and it’ll go wonderfully I’m sure!

Best of luck to fellow REAers <3

My interview went very differently. I only had 30 minutes to talk. My interviewer was very stoic and mechanical and barely looked up at me or talked to me while he/she typed everything I said. For me, it was NOT a conversation. As other people have said it usually is a very comfortable and chill conversation (like @triplehelix), but I would strongly advise to also prepare yourself mentally for the opposite. Just my experience! :frowning:

My interview went -amazingly-, but I only feel that way because a lot of my jokes landed :)!

@bellbeast thats sad
i applied rd last year and had an interview, and it was really fun. I had a bio major, that was really passionate about stanford and she told me a lot of funny stories of her time there.
On another note, I read last years article that says that 80% of ea applicants had a 4.0 or above GPA, and I’m feeling extremely demoralized because mine isn’t even close…

@bellbeast - not sure if there is anything wrong with the way your interview went. I think the interviewer will prepare a very good report about you based on all the notes.

Thank goodness they don’t interview in CA (yet!). This sounds stressful.

Yeah they don’t do it in Cyprus either. Seems like a weirdly stressful thing.

So I had my interview on Friday and at the end, my interviewer gave me a sheet titled “Appendix - Stanford Websites” with several links and really specific info about financial aid, overseas opportunities, cultural/religious/arts centers, and student housing.

Is this standard at the conclusion of all Stanford interviews or could this mean something extra since it’s super-specific info that would only be relevant to accepted students?

@njg00n I wouldn’t read anything into it. The interviewer has zero idea of your ultimate chances (unless you were super terrible in your interview! hahaha). He/she was simply being polite and hoping to leave you with a good impression should Stanford accept you.

I have an interview coming up at a Starbucks… what are some interview tips?
