I also have my interview today at Starbucks. Does anyone know if the interviewer normally pays for the student?
@theglowingdragon Why would that matter? I’d just pay for my drink. That’s the last thing you should worry about xD
@vasodys I’m just worried that I will somehow completely violate proper etiquette and look bad before I even get to talk :-SS
How much can the interviewer’s report affect admissions decision, and what goes into it?
@theglowingdragon I think you should just go in like you’d go with anyone to a Starbucks
@vasodys I am woefully inexperienced with Starbucks encounters haha. Hopefully it’ll be ok.
@theglowingdragon the interviewer will probably already be there. If so, it might be easier to just sit down and not worry about the drinks. It does seem a little awkward to walk in, see the person, walk away from the person and get yourself a drink. Do you offer to pay for their drink? It’s weird for them to buy you a drink. It’s could just be a bit awkward. My daughter met her interviewer at a Starbucks in a Barnes and Noble. She just walked in and sat down. By doing so, it eliminated any awkwardness. Make sure you ask if they are from Starbucks. I’ve heard of many kids sitting down and starting interviews only to figure out a few minutes into it that they are at the wrong interview table.
This is good question as this is often a young person’s first encounter with an interview/meeting w/some social protocols in place. This is applicable to other business mtgs as well.

If you arrive early and want one, get yourself a drink. When the interviewer (clearly your senior) arrives, he/she may or may not get a drink. You do not offer to buy him/her one. If he/she wants one, he/she will purchase one.
-
If you both arrive simultaneously or the interviewer is there already, he/she may offer to buy you a drink. If so, accept if you want one. If not, you can decline politely and have a seat.
If he/she does not offer you a drink and you want one, ask if you can excuse yourself to get one. Nothing wrong with this whatsoever. Again, no need whatsoever to offer to buy him/her a drink.
This is the typical situation when a junior and a senior meet (interviewee & interviewer, student & professor, job applicant & hiring person, etc.) – the senior knows to offer to buy a drink for the junior or at least allow junior to buy himself/herself a drink; the junior does not offer to buy a drink for senior.
If both parties are more equal (say classmates or student & grad assistant), then the mutual offering of drinks is more common.
In most circumstances, it’s inadvisable to order food/snacks unless you know, in advance, that this is a business meal (i.e. both are having breakfast, lunch or dinner). You don’t want to be chatting w/food in your mouth if at all possible. And if offered, don’t ask for the $6-8 super mocha frappe whatevercinno or kiwi smoothie with whey powder and unicorn dust. Get a simple tea, coffee or soda that’ll cost $2.
Good luck, interviewees!
I’m trying to submit all of the Financial Aid stuff by the priority deadline tomorrow. My family completed the FAFSA and CSS a while ago however we only got the invitation to IDOC earlier today. I noticed that they said it takes 3-5 days to process each document. Will my documents on IDOC be considered late for the priority deadline if they are submitted tonight but processed later this week?
I am in the same boat as @woakley5
@woakley5 @fgcollegehopeful - FWIW - I don’t know about Stanford, but Harvard Fin aid department responded to my query earlier that they don’t hold anything against the applicant for delays in fin aid documents.
I am confused. My son filled out the Stanford application and it shows that they have received everything. We have not filled out the CSS or the IDOC…we filled out the FAFSA several weeks ago but had no idea about the other things. Is that going to stop him from getting accepted or getting financial aid?
@Tgirlfriend I don’t believe that the financial aid stuff appears on the application portal. I’m actually not sure of any way to confirm receipt of these documents.
hey guys!! so this is kind of dumb but for some reason I thought november 15th was wednesday. I wanted to get the fafsa submitted by the 15th for the priority filing date, but it’s too late now bc it’s 8pm and i won’t be home until late. do you think if i submitted it early on the 16th they’d still give me their financial aid decisions by dec 15?
I thought FAFSA and CSS are only required for the need based financial aid, not the merit based scholarships, is this correct?
Hi, Does Financial Aid stuff including FAFSA, IDOC, and CSS affect admissions at all? I applied REA but did not even know about these following forms. I did indicate on my application that I intend to pursue need-based Financial Aid, but I thought financial aid stuff was due sometime next semester
ohh also, are we supposed to fill out the FAFSA for 2016-2017 or 2017-2018? lol sorry im pretty clueless about these forms
@educationfan Stanford does not have merit-based scholarships without financial need (unless you count athletic scholarships as merit).
@Ynotgo That’s a bummer… Good thing it’s not #1 on my S’ list:)
@woakley5 According to the FAQ section on the Stanford Financial Aid webpage, they do not confirm receipt of relevant documents. In addition, November 15 is the date documents need to be submitted, not processed.
