Stanford Class of 2021 Applicant Discussion

@marccoreus11 you may not get your scores in time for REA, but you could still send them in later. It also depends on if you take it with or without essay. With essay it takes around 5-8 weeks to process, but I’ve gotten my non-essay ACT back in as little as ten days.

Hi guys! I was wondering if having a rec letter from my choir director would be a good idea? She has known me the longest and seen me grow, but I’m hoping to major in compsci so I’m not sure if her recommendation will help.

Do you have to retake the essay part each time you take the ACT? My DD did great on her first essay and is retaking the ACT in October. Can she just not do the essay part since they would still “superscore” the essay from her ACT last year, right??

@mayadaud13 I’m in the same position as you! I want to major in compsci but my main recommender is my english teacher because she knows me best. In my opinion it’s better to include recommenders who know you and can speak of your character as well as your academic performance. My college counselor said it’d be ok to include my english teacher so I think it’s going to be fine.

@kath00 yeah you can take the ACT without essay it’s actually cheaper

@maradaud13 I’d say a recommendation from a teacher that knows you well and can testify to how you’ve grown as a person is a lot more valuable than a recommendation from a teacher related to your major that is just going to write stuff like uhhhhhhhh they’re okay I guess. They want to know about you as a student and as a person outside of your major too.

hey guys, Stanford has been my dream school since I was in middle school and I’m really excited to get the chance to apply there this year. Im a black senior (duh) from Texas and I have a 34 ACT and 3.9 GPA, I’m a black student from Texas. I am applying to Stanford REA because its my dream school however, I’m planning on taking the subject tests on October 1. Will my subject test scores be sent to Stanford before the November deadline?

@tacanadian yep the stanford website says it’ll accept october scores (:

Thanks @kbn2015 r u also applying to stanford?

@tacanadian yep!! stanfords also my dream school haha

does anyone know who rec letters are supposed to be addressed to? my recommender for the optional rec was wondering if they should use “to whom it may concern” or someone specific like a regional admissions officer?

I hope we both get in @kbn2015 haha. For your question, I think if its “to whom it may concern” is fine because that was what my theatre teacher did for me. You might want to email Stanford to confirm this though.

How exactly does Stanford consider GPA in the admissions process? I heard that when recalculating GPA, they only look at Sophomore and Junior grades and counts A- as A, and B- and B+ as B, and so on… if this is true, then my recalculated GPA will be lower.

Also, is GPA just a filter to weed out unqualified applicants?

Yes, we were told at a Houston meeting last year that 9th grade transcript not evaluated by Admissions.

ohhh thanks!! @tacanadian also haha yes that would be so great

just wondering, how far along are you guys with your personal statement/supplemental essays? im still working on my personal statement & havent started my supplements yet. im a little worried i wont have things done on time

Thankfully, I’m done with everything for Stanford, just waiting for teacher recommendations

Hey! Current junior here. What do you guys think Stanford considers the most in its application evaluation?

Yeah, @kbn2015, I just finished my last supplement (the roommate essay) last night. Currently taking a day off before I start scrutinizing them to death. All the same, don’t be worried, you still have a month until REA and three months until RD. Just take your time.

@kbn2015 I finished mine I’m just getting mine reviewed by someone so I have to do revisions and stuff. I still have to get my teacher recs and stuff like that so I’m a little bit behind schedule for REA… but i think i’ll have everything done before then (fingers crossed)
