Stanford Class of 2021 Applicant Discussion

Hi everyone! Senior from CA applying EA. I’m retaking some of my subject tests and taking a new one on Oct. 1, but I won’t get the scores in time before the EA deadline, so I have to put for the College Board to send my scores to Stanford, without knowing what those scores will be, and if they will surpass my previous scores. Do you think I should send the two not as good subject test scores I already have, given that I will most likely do better on the Oct. test? I should probably send all of them but I’m not even sure if I have a choice. Does anyone know if Stanford participates in score choice or if you are required to send all of your Subject Test scores? I know you have to send all of your SAT and ACT scores.
Good luck to everyone, I hope we all get in haha wouldn’t that be a dream.

@Harvardgirl21 you must send all of your testing scores.

@bwaygirl1 Thanks! Where did you find this info? I know that SAT Subject Test scores aren’t required, so I am a bit confused as to why Stanford would require all Subject Test scores be sent as well as SAT and ACT scores.

Stanford requires you to submit all SAT scores as well as any SAT Subject Test scores that you have done.

@Harvardgirl21 look here http://admission.stanford.edu/application/freshman/testing.html

My D got in last year and did not submit a single subject area test score. And she was admitted REA.

@madredos - that’s great news - any suggestion for those applying this year?

I wish I had the magic answer. Somehow you really need to convey that you are the kid they want. I honestly didn’t feel that they only took the top kids. What we did see was that kids with depth were more likely to get in than kids with breadth. All cliche I know. Sorry!!

@madredos

What was the thing your kid excelled in over and above stats, Sports? Arts? Community Service? Leadership?

Leadership and community service. And a lot of layered activities. Research, working with a biologist, volunteering with the research animals, spending summers studying on a boat. And to be honest, both of my kids spent A LOT of time on their Stanford apps. Like an entire weekend. Writing, rewriting, fine tuning. It was a lot of effort on their parts. They gave the app more thought than I believed was necessary. But I guess they were right to exert the effort.

@madredos Do you mind sharing your daughter’s stats? You don’t have to just for people to know how well we have to do to get into Stanford haha.

Top 2% of her class, 2300 SAT, 33 ACT, no subject area tests, IB Diploma candidate, NMF, coeditor school paper, president Key Club, co-president Ecology Club, research won NOAA award.

I am still not convinced it was her stats, although they are great to me. I know a lot of kids can show you better stats. Spend some quality time with your application and think about what they are asking you, what can you share about yourself that isn’t already in black and white on the form of your stats. And good luck. It can be anybody’s day.

@vasodys @bwaygirl1 and anyone else who is wondering about Subject Tests: I called Stanford’s Office of Undergraduate Admission today, and the representative stated that for all required testing – SAT and ACT – applicants are not allowed to use Score Choice when reporting scores and must send all scores. For Subject Tests, APs, and other recommended but not required testing, however, you are allowed to send as many scores as you wish, or not at all, as they are optional. The woman said that if you are sending, at least two are recommended, but it is entirely up to the applicant whether he/she submits SAT Subject Test scores or not. So the final word is that Score Choice only for SAT Subject Tests is allowed.

@Harvardgirl21 …so you are saying you must send ALL ACT and SAT test scores however you do NOT have to send all SAT Subject test scores or AP test scores to Stanford? Is that correct?

@Tgirlfriend yes exactly. SAT and ACT scores are required for Stanford, and you must send all scores. Subject Tests and APs are optional, so you have the option to send them if you wish, and you can send whatever combo you like (Score Choice).

Is there any reason to actually send AP scores? I thought they were just self-reported at the application stage?

hey do any of you know how we’re supposed to go about getting the teacher evaluation forms completed?
like are we supposed to download it from the common app and email it to our recommenders??? my school uses naviance, is the form already available for them on there to submit with their letters??? my counselor’s been absent for a while and im kinda lost tbh

@kbn2015 you’re supposed to enter your teachers’ details (Name, subject, email) in the Recommendations and FERPA section of the Common App, and the system will invite them to create an account. Then, you have to assign one as your counselor and two others as teacher recommenders. They have to do the rest.

@vasodys ohh ok thanks! is it possible to change who the counselor recommendation comes from? my principal wants to submit his on behalf of my counselor bc she’s new and doesn’t know me well, but the common app won’t let me assign him instead of my counselor.

@kbn2015 You can go to invite & manage recommenders and delete your current counselor. Then invite your principal in their place.
