Stanford, CMU, Duke, Columbia, Berkeley Chance!

Hey guys, would you chance me for Stanford (possibly REA), CMU, Duke, Columbia, Berkeley, U of Washington, and Cornell like target, reach, safety, that kind of thing? Thanks so much! And I'll chance back! Oh and I'm thinking Mechanical Engineering

Here are my stats:

80+ hours at a low income housing complex as a camp counselor
~120 hours as a camp counselor at a sports summer camp

Your stats are great but (for the most part) you are looking at super competitive schools. You have a shot for sure, but nobody can really tell you whether or not you will get in. Being asian will hurt your chances a bit too. CMU I think you have a really great shot at and I don’t know enough about U of Washington and Berkeley to help with those.

Being Female should help you out since you want to be an engineering major

Being Asian will help your chances a lot at Berkeley, a school which I’m sure you’ll get into.

Where are you located?

Stanford - who knows

Duke - high reach

Columbia SEAS - mid reach

Cornell - mid reach

CMU - mechanical engineering - low reach.

Berkeley and U Wash - depends on where you are a resident

I live in Washington state which is mainly why I have UW there. And I’m wondering if I should look at other safety schools. Does anyone have any suggestions, and maybe in the area? Thanks so much!

Anybody else? …

You should get into UW.

Not necessarily safeties but I think you should look into the following:

Rice
USC

How is your financial situation?

Stanford - crapshoot
Columbia - high reach
Duke - reach
Cornell - low reach
CMU - high match
Berkeley - match
UW - safety

@texaspg - I was considering Rice but I’m not too sure I want to go to Texas. (no offense). And the chances of me getting any aid are pretty much slim to none. But would that really affect my admissions decision? Or are you talking more along the lines of where I could afford to go?

@Vaillant - Thanks! The only thing I’m worried about is whether I should look into another safety that’s even more sure than UW. Seattle U???

Thanks for the input, guys! It really helps. Anyone else?

At the income you are showing, i would suspect FA is impossible. Are your parents willing to spend 60k per year to send you to college if you get in?

Why not Texas? Rice is ranked number 1 in happiness. Rice does have some merit scholarships and so does USC.

Do you expect to make national merit semi finalist?

Yeah, my parents realize that we’re probably not going to get financial aid. And about Texas, I used to have family there, so I’ve been there a few times. I just wasn’t such a big fan of it there. I’ve just really had my eyes set on the coasts. And I’m hoping for National Merit, but with a 222 it’s pretty borderline so hard to tell. I’m considering applying to USC. Do you think it would be more of a match or a reach though? Cuz I’m trying to find more match schools. Thanks so much for all your input!

great stats! you’re pretty well rounded so your resume should be pretty competitive anywhere.
here’s my opinion

USC - match
Stanford - reach
Berkeley - high match
Duke/Cornell - idk
Washington - match

222 is a good score for national merit. Sounds like it was 220 last year.

If you get into USC, you can get half a tuition if you are national merit. Theoretically it is a match but too many people apply and so it is not always clear if you can even get in.

You can apply to some state schools like Minnesota, Pittsburgh if you need safeties and they offer a lot of money for national merit (Pittsburgh does not call it national merit but they do waive tuition as their highest scholarship).

Georgia tech is another good engineering school but high male to female ratio. Same issue with RPI.

Thanks Texaspg! That definitely influences my decision for applying to USC! But I’m wondering about the male to female ratio. Would it help me if there was a high male to female ratio? Because you make it sound like a bad thing…

The question is whether you want to go to a college where there are only 30% females.

Hi :)

The fact that you are female and scoring so high on your tests is a big plus. Female applying for engineering, even BIGGER plus. Female engineers with good physics scores are at a big advantage.

SAT great. EC’s looking good. EC’s show that you aren’t just a bookworm! haha.

Stanford - To be honest, at top tier schools like this, no one knows anyone’s chances.

U.C. Berkeley - Living in California gives you a slight advantage I believe. And with your scores, this should be no problem.

Cornell - Looks pretty promising. My friend (male) got in this year with similar stats. And since you are female, you should have even better chance.

CMU - I think you are in for Carnegie Mellon.

Good luck to you! :)

Yeah, I’m not too sure how I feel right now about whether I want to be a gender minority or not. It’s a toss up between them favoring me more as a girl and being surrounded by guys (which doesn’t sound too bad at this point ;)).

And kevin12345, I actually live in WA. Does that make a big difference for Berkeley?

Anyone else?

WA is oos, so yeas, you will lose the in state advantage
