starting boarding school mid year

Hi, I have 15 year old daughter in 9th grade in an exclusive/competitive private school she has been there since pre-k. We always planned for her to graduate from there. However, I just got diagnosed with cancer in January and circumstances have changed drastically. After getting all A"s" and one B first semester, the second semester has been a struggle. Once I was diagnosed, we thought she would finish the year and start boarding school nest year (I have to travel a lot now for treatment). She has been very emotionally affected by me being sick and is struggling in the second semester. After being consistently a great student her whole life her freshman year it’s going to all be gone ;-( because of me being sick!

Anyway, we would like to move her to a boarding school right away so she can get back on track. Does anyone know which boarding schools will accept a student mid year? I have been focused on places with diversity, because she is bi racial. If anyone has suggestions I would be grateful.

Boarding schools tend to finish relatively early, s

  • about 9 weeks to go, including spring break and exams - so this year may be too close to finished to make this a reasonable plan for now.

I know a couple of kids who started at George School later in the fall - all with extenuating circumstances - so you might reach out to them to see if they can at least look at her for the fall if they have space. Extremely diverse BS. But I don’t think this year is really an option.

What a hard time for all of you. There is about 1/3 of the year left at most schools, so hard to move her now. Does she have an acceptance for September? If so, I’d focus on that. For college if she does poorly this semester, then has an upwards trend in grades she can explain that in her essay. Upward trending is good. Some schools don’t look as closely at 9th grade grades. Hope your treatments go well.

Perhaps online would be best right now…she could spend time with you while still moving ahead with school. Scheduling is very flexible. JHU-CTY offers a number of high school classes with the option of getting a transcript and grade. Admission is via a test and not dependent on prior grades.

Stanford Online High School might be worth investigating.
