Assuming we get our acceptance letters (to whatever school) can we start taking classes in the summer? Or must we wait until Fall? I never understood this.

yeah u can take classes in summer…not sure how financial aid works for it though

I’ve signed up for summer school at Berkeley. I’m in for 2 classes. If I don’t get in, I’ll withdraw and only lose my 150$ deposit. I’ll get the rest (unit fees) ~2k back.

Wherever I get in, I intend to go to summer school. There are too many prereqs that my CC doesn’t offer.

Both Santa Barbara and Irvine mentioned some sort of “early start” program for transfers, which starts in the Summer. They say its a good way to get to know other transfers, get settled in, etc. Sounds good, I really hope all the UC’s do it! Whichever one I end up going to (UCB) had better have it too :)

“Summer start” sounds like the “senior special” you get at Denny’s or something.

Regardless of where I go, I’ll be doing summer start… they say it just helps you get used to the campus without a bagillion people running around.

Just curious, those of you that plan to enroll in summer school, will you be commuting? Dorms? How does housing work?

Berkeley has an early start summers session as well.

[Berkeley Summer Sessions](Transfer Edge | Berkeley Summer Sessions)

that UCSB transitions thingy sounds good. they have various session options, 6 week and 10 week sessions and 5 week sessions(i think).

regardless of the length i think it may be worth it, especially if youre thinking about double majoring.

and they use your 2009-2010 financial aid information so if youre thinking about it maybe make sure you update your 2009-2010 FAFSA to include the school youre going to take summer school with.

You can take classes NOT fulfilling IGETC or anything over the summer at community college, right? Say I’ve met all the requirements but I want to rack up a few more units before I head in to UC__?

How does that work as far as transcripts are concerned?

for the transitions thingy on the FAQ it says this about CC summer sessions:
Units that you take this summer at your community college are eligible to transfer. It’s very important that you talk to the undergraduate advisor in your major department about this. If the advisor has identified a course you need that is offered at your CC, then it may be worth your while to take the course(s) at your CC.
[UCSB Summer Transitions Program](http://www.summer.ucsb.edu/transitions/transitionsfaq.html)

and about summer transcripts last year they were due late August early September, but i notified UC that i was considering taking summer courses that didnt have an effect on IGETC or my unit count.

@ ItsMe213: I’m going to live in the co-ops at UCB if I do summer school (basically pending if I get in). I’ve actually already applied to the co-ops, and I won’t have to fully pay until May or so. They’re a great, cheap option.

This all looks wonderful. I’m definitely going to start Berkeley in the summer. (assuming I get in)

But, wait. Can you ALREADY sign up for classes? Also, you need six units, does that usually mean like two classes? How many units is, like, a standard psych class at Berkeley? Three or four?

AND LASTLY,

Does anyone have a link to a map of Berkeley and its dorms? I visited yesterday and want to see which dorms are the Unit 1 and Unit 2.

Wow Riley, you and I have similar summer goals!

I have registered for summer classes. They’ve been open for registration since mid-February I believe. I would highly recommend signing up for classes now while they’re still available! All you have to do is just go to:

[Berkeley Summer Sessions](http://summer.berkeley.edu/)

It’s really important that you figure out what classes you want to take and what professors that you want if you have the option (you wouldn’t if there was only 1 class offered on what you wanted to take). Go to the link and figure out what you want to take. Write down the times/days the classes are. 6 units is full-time during summer, so I think you’ll need 6 units for dorm eligibility.

If you are planning on doing a couple psych upper division courses (there are 8 of them), then you’ll already be ahead starting in the fall! I’m all about getting ahead; I’ve been doing summer classes every summer for as long as I can remember. Hence, I’ll be newly 19 when I transfer.

The Psych classes are 3 units each unless you do the upper division research and design class (or whatever it’s called), which is 4 units. I want to take that in the fall because I think it’d be more important to have it for a less condensed period of time, and plus, I really enjoy stats in Psychology (which will be prevalent in this class…ANOVA and stuff like that). Thus, I’d rather have the time to enjoy it for a semester. Oh and over summer, 2 classes is generally 6 units…apparently summer classes are also a little easier than semester courses.

In my case, I’ve registered for Genetics and Society (prereq I haven’t completed) and Developmental Psychopathology (upper division psych elective). Therefore, I’ll be done with prereqs in the summer and I’ll have 1/8 upper divs done for the major. I’m trying to get ahead so that I can teach a decal my senior year. I’m also planning on joining a fraternity, so I want a less stressful first semester in the fall. I applied as a phil major, which is why I don’t have all the prereqs done for psych, but assuming I get in, I’ll be switching into psych…which is surprisingly easy to do.

I’ll be living in the co-ops. These are really fun, great ways to meet people, and if you live in Cloyne, you’ll almost definitely meet people in your major and/or have similar interests. In the fall you can still live in the dorms or in the co-ops. Many of them are themed and apparently they have pretty cool soirees and parties. You should check them out! They’re about a block from campus. Unfortunately, I know hardly anything about the Units (1 and 2) :/.

Anyway, definitely check out the co-ops!

[Our Co-ops](http://berkeleystudentcooperative.org/our-co-ops)

If you want more info on them, let me know and I’ll post a link of a good thread that a CC member on here told me about the coops.

I wonder if most of the UCs off some sort of summer start.

That is something I would definitely be interested in.

@ Riley: Whoah! lol one more thing: I literally just received an e-mail from the co-ops stating that I’ll be receiving a letter from the co-ops offering me a spot at Cloyne :). There are 150 people in 1 huge house, but apparently it’s a blast. Btw one last thing, during summer, quads become doubles and triples become singles…meaning that you’re going to have a huge room with or without a roommate.

My total cost for July 3 - August 14 cost me $1,033. My summer schooling cost me about $2,050. Therefore plan for about $3100 or so for summer school and living. If you go from 6/21-8/14, then it’ll cost a bit more.

wow! Thanks! We should definitely meet up during the summer Which session are you planning on doing?

Those co-ops sound pretty neat, but I’m really itching for that “dorm” experience.

Can you really already sign up?! On the website, I could have sworn it said it isn’t open for transfers to register until April 30th? I must have misread something. I’m definitely going to sign up for classes soon!

You said you’re going to switch from phil to psych. I actually kind of want to switch from psych to sociology. You said the major switching is easy? Can you give me any more insight on how that works?
