Hey, I’m an incoming freshman and I have a few questions about the processes involved in starting the new school year. I was looking at the school calendar and didn’t understand somethings. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

(1) What exactly is convocation?

(2) Classes start on Sep. 2nd, which is a tuesday. Do we have our tues classes then? Because on Sep. 3rd the calendar states that Monday classes will be held. How exactly does that work?

convocation is basically a ceremony to start off the school year. It's in Johnson Chapel some time Monday and the professors march in and I think Marx gives some speech. You don't have to go to it, esp. considering the chapel would only hold about 400-500 people. It's not really that important.
Tuesday classes are sept. 2nd. Technically Wednesday you are supposed to follow the Monday schedule, but professors really do what they want to do, so you can ask them.

convocation is a welcoming ceremony.

1) Convocation is the welcoming ceremony. Don't go. You get to see a couple of honorary degrees, then Tony Marx gives a speech.

2) There are a number of classes which are Monday only, so Wednesday you follow the Monday schedule. It probably won't affect you that much unless you're taking one of said classes.

Thanks for the replies!

Can anyone describe how they spent their orientation period when students went to FOOT, CEOT, or remained on campus? Which did you do and how was it?

It's really about getting aquainted to campus and getting to know people in your dorm or around campus. I went on FOOT which was really great. If you remain on campus, there is still tons of stuff to do.
