I'm in need of some help. I'm a second year at UCLA majoring in Biz-Econ and was accepted to McDonough for the fall. I really don't like Econ or Accounting and I'm considering the transfer to McDonough just because it seems like a guaranteed job out of college. I've never actually visited Georgetown so I dont know what its like... So here's my question: is it worth supplanting myself into a business program if I'm not sure that's what I want to do? Or should I stay at UCLA and try to take some different classes?...

well do you enjoy UCLA?

quite simply... no. I think the academics are pretty weak and the social life is a little too anti-intellectual. But is georgetown worth the extra cost and how much better is the social life?

If you want to do anything related to finance, the decision is incredibly easy... Georgetown

^^ agree with dhh.... Georgetowns places a ridiculous amount of students on Wall st!

I grew up in Los Angeles and took a summer class at UCLA. I've also had the opportunity to tour Georgetown several times because I now live in Virginia and was interested in the school. UCLA and Georgetown have WAY different vibes. Is there a reason that you haven't at least come to visit it once? It's a few hundred dollars that is well worth it.

Also, if you don't like Biz-Econ then why are you majoring in it and why did you apply to transfer into McDonough? It sounds like you need to evaluate what you want to do with your college education more so than where you should go. If you don't like business - don't go into business school. There is no such thing as a guaranteed job anyway.

I say stay at UCLA and try for some different classes. College is about branching out, learning what you like and NOT about getting more specialized in something you don't care for. You can save that boring path for later on.

i would go to georgetown.

smiledarling, i'm interested what are the differences between georgetown and UCLA?

can you compare the two? these are two schools i consider for grad school..

Well, I'm not an expert on either of them. I only took one class at UCLA as a high school junior and that was 8 years ago. I've never studied at Georgetown but I've vistited it at least four times and usually when classes were in session.

The vibe of each school is different. A lot of has to do with demographics - UCLA is a state school and while they have a lot of different people representing other parts of the nation and the world they still have a lot of California, including plenty of Los Angeles, residents. With Georgetown they also have diversity but many of the kids I met were from the Northeast. UCLA is also a much larger school with lots more ground to cover between classes and more kids to meet. The surrounding area of UCLA is Westwood - an upper-end part of LA with lots of nice, nice chain and private restaurants. Georgetown (the surrounding area of the campus) I think has a lot more charm but I grew up in LA so I'm used to that laid-back glitzy thing. I like the old townhouses of Georgetown and the crammed little shopping boutiques. Georgetown seems really fun when you walk around.

Traffic in both places sucks - bigtime.

You have to visit both campuses because they both have such a different atmosphere. If you are seriously considering a choice between them then it should be an educated one. They're both fantastic schools so it really comes down to fit for your choice. Don't shortchange yourself.

This is one of my problems. Biz-Econ is what I've liked to best so far at UCLA, most of the classes/professors are horrible. I applied to McDonough because I dont think UCLA is the right place for me. But if I go to Georgetown am I essentially sticking myself into business for better or for worse? I'd really like to get into sports business so I figured it might help with that as well.

(Thanks for response)

I've been to Georgetown (well, for a day)

Definitely liked it, but it wasn't "California" enough for me, if that makes any sense.

I've been to UCLA once, but the thought of living in LA scares me lol

(the materialism, the fake people, you know, the stereotypes).

I know I'll be able to find people like myself, but I hope the amount of snotty shallow people isn't too overwhelming. I know I sound judgemental but thats how I feel.

I guess I need to visit during school to get a feel for UCLA's campus.
