I've tried for hours to try to get Steam to connect in my dorm but all I get is "To run Steam, you must first connect to the internet". I obviously am connected to the internet, and I've tried all sorts of crap to try and get it to work but haven't succeeded. Has anyone had a similar experience or maybe knows a solution?

Ethernet or wireless? Location and name of wireless connection?

Steam works fine for me. I’m using (wifi) ‘UCLASECURERES’. By the way, I’ve tried to play games on some of the other wifi choices and it didn’t work, so make sure you’re not on ‘UCLAWEBRES’ or others like that.

UCLAWEB and UCLAWEB_RES block all ports except those for internet browsing (unless you use a VPN.)

You need to use UCLAWIFI or UCLASECURE_RES. (or use your UCLA VPN)

[How do I connect to the wireless network on campus?](<a href=“Knowledge Base - UCLA IT Portal”>Knowledge Base - UCLA IT Portal)

why are you using wifi for online games? I know it’s convenient, but nothing beats an ethernet cable.

with the transfer speed of draft n these days you don’t have to stay on ethernet to have good connection anymore, sometimes its just inconvenient to use ethernet, for example when i was living in the dorms i was in a triple but we had to use a router because otherwise one of us won’t be able to go online, but now even when you guys got wifis and don’t need a port for router, one of the roommates still has to stay on wifi… plus draft n should be faster than the switches they give you, unless you paid for your own gigabyte switch…

plus i don’t get why people try to get the absolute maximum connection speed when it comes to online games, im running on a wireless g router thats 2 walls away from my room and im still able to play l4d2 with no lag at all (well i did have to put dd wrt on it to boost the xmit rating)

btw anyone else jump on the l4d2 deal for 6 bucks last week? :D

i had this problem with tf2, make sure that steam is in online mode and that you are logged in.

There’s too many variables that affect wireless connections for gaming. Also certain games take more bandwidth for online gaming. That’s why i usually recommend an ethernet cable for gaming. Also not all routers or wireless cards are created equal either. My ex-roommate had trouble over wireless playing starcraft in his room when the router was in the living room. Could have been the router or the card. I don’t know what kind of wireless routers the dorms use or if they have ones that have new the draft n tech. I know many of the libraries use netgear, but never bothered to get on top of chair to take a closer look.

What router did u use with dd-wrt? I have it on my old linksys wrt54g that lacks memory, so it crashes when there are too many bittorrent connections =/ . I’m currently shopping for a new one with a good amount of memory.

thats true, but its not like we are professional gamers, one or two disconnects won’t kill us i would assume dorms use draft n, since they already had wireless n speed my first year in dogwood, figured that after 3 years they didn’t go back down…

i use 2 linksys wrt54gv8 bridged together, seems to get the job done since we only have 3 people and none of us are hardcore bittorrenters, i play ffxiv and steam games, pretty much never got dced because of the wireless before
