So, I got into CAS for fall 2011. Right now I'm not sure if I want to business or if I should have just applied to Stern. Disregarding the possibility of transfer, what are job prospects like right out of undergrad with a CAS econ degree from NYU? Also, could somebody with actual experience tell me about the difficulty of transferring to Stern from CAS? If I make it my goal from the first day, is it possible?

I can tell you about transferring from CAS to Stern. This is very, very difficult if not impossible. The retention rate at Stern is very high since it is one of the highest ranked business schools in the country and therefore, very competitive.

So is it harder to transfer from CAS to Stern as opposed to a different school altogether?

Depends on what type of job you’re looking for after graduation. For the more elite finance jobs, Stern kids might have a leg-up so you’d really have to apply yourself. However, from my experience Econ kids still get a lot of the internships in finance and consulting, so it’s not like you’re out of the equation altogether. If you’re dead set on transferring to Stern though, I’d give it a shot. It’s not necessarily impossible, but just extremely competitive.

“You’re not out of the equation altogether” is a very apt way to put it. You still have access to some recruiting and OCR and your career opportunities are solid, but unfortunately you live in someone else’s shadow. You aren’t the cream of the crop on campus, compared to Stern’s powerhouse name you’re a bit lower on the totem pole. It’s almost worse than going to a lesser target where you’re the standouts.

CAS econ will almost doubtlessly give you the best chance at an internal transfer though, so if that’s something you’re interested in, you could take the freshman year and see if you like econ, try to transfer, and worst case, stay in a top-10 economics program.
