It's been a month now since I submitted, and my app is still with the first reader
Is this a bad thing? :/

Hope not - my son had all his stuff in by mid October and he’s still with the first reader. I think I remember people commenting a couple years ago (when my older son was applying) that the status report isn’t always reliable. I think some people went from begin with first reader right up until they got an envelope in the mail. I think my son is going to call this week and just make sure everything has been received.

All Admissions Counselors read at different paces. Some of us have 50% of our “first reads” done, some of us only have 10% of our first reads done. Many of us will prioritize any remaining ED II applicants, applicants applying to the Combined-Admissions Programs, and EN applicants first. After those queues are complete, we move on to our Regular Decision pools.

Make sure your MyRoc account indicates that your application is complete and with a first reader. Feel free to call if you still have anxiety, but once again please realize that we have thousands of unread first reads at this point, and you are not alone!

Tyler

My son sat with the first reader for months. Then he switched to ed2 and it zoomed through the rest of the way. It didn’t change to step 5 until we paid the deposit.

I’m guessing it’s irrelevant what step it’s on right now. All files will be read with equal attention. Imagine there are 13,000 applicants, not sure how many 1st readers, but that has to be a ton of files to read in a short amount of time. There has to be a semblance of organization, either first in first out, or being separated into ed1, ed2, en, and rd. Various admissions readers say it takes anywhere from 15 seconds (eek!) to 15 minutes to review one file. I believe that first reader makes some kind of page that summarizes a student, they assign some kind of number to it or a thumbs up thumbs down. Then it moves to the second reader and I have no idea in general how deeply the file gets read. Then I believe that 1st reader presents their files to the committee. And I don’t think they’re smoking cigars, sitting in leather chairs in 3 piece suits. More likely they’re at a card table, with a light bulb hanging overhead wearing sweat pants and tshirts - lol.

The massive organization and piles of files must be beyond belief. Can you imagine sorting all of this stuff?

My daughter’s homepage says her application is “not complete” but every box is checked off except for the one for the midyear grade report, which is not yet available since the semester isn’t over for several weeks yet. She has applied early notification. Is this a problem? Does she need to contact admissions?

The Mid Year Report will not prevent your daughter’s application from being read by a First Reader. We don’t receive most MYR’s until February. As long as the other required items are here, she is completely fine. If you have any concerns, feel free to give a call tomorrow! (The office is closed today.)

Thanks so much!
