Straight into Physics

Hi all, I just registered for my classes, and I really want to go straight into Classical Physics, my current classes are:
Calculus(4)
Water in History (3)
Intro to Computers (3)
Geol of Campus Waterways (1)
Calculus EOP Wld (3 for approval)

I missed the chem exam by 2 points to get into Chem 2a, but the reason is that I took chem 3 years ago, so i guessed on 90% of it. If Physics is just a regular freshman class, but Chemistry is used to gauge how good a student is at Science, is it a good Idea to try to get Into Physics 9A? It’s a 5 unit course, so i know its a no nonsense course. I like physics alot, but not chemistry (bad HS experience) I have 12 credit hours (freshman qtr 1) and was just wondering if it’s a bad idea to try it with my current coursework (if i take it ill try to drop the 1 unit class)

Hi! It is not a good idea at all. Math 21B is a prerequisite for Physics 9A. So it is only after you finish with Math 21B will you be able to take it. Also, even if there is no prerequisite, you will be competing with sophomore students or maybe even juniors and so it might be difficult to score a good grade. I would suggest only taking Physics 9A in the spring of freshmen year or in your sophomore year. That is what some of my friends did. The classes most freshmen will take is Math and Chem so I really suggest doing that first.

Oh seriously? I didn’t see any prereq’s in the catalog
Im just being a brat, but I just really don’t want to take the Chemistry placement exam, or Chemistry in general. The math major req’s has Chem 2a-2b Physics 9A-9B or comp sci/ econ courses, so I figure since my minor might be physics, I should just go straight into it, but I guess I will have to take it next year :/

i) In my opinion, prerequisites are not so important. We hardly used any calculus at all in 9HA. Just a bit for the position/velocity/acceleration relations. Most people can probably learn that in a day on their own watching youtube videos or reading a text. I think most people find 9A pretty easy, just a rehash of high school physics with a few new topics.

ii) I don’t really feel that chemistry is a reliable indicator of how you will do in 9A. Although I’ve taken the chem stuff already, none of that stuff came up in 9A, and admittedly, I was horrible at chemistry and did fine in physics.

iii) Despite all I’ve said, it’s better to keep your unit load down if you’re uncertain of taking that much. Don’t want to bite off more than you can chew.
