Any current students, grads, or parents who can share their insights about the Strategic Communications program at Mizzou? What were your factors in choosing it (or not choosing it) over similar programs at other schools?
Many thanks in advance.

I can only give you one perspective. My daughter originally picked Strategic Communications at Mizzou because it is part of their journalism program which is number one in the country. We all figured it would be great to have the experience of being in that program while still working towards a degree that is often found in the business school or sometimes not even offered (and you need to pick marketing or advertising instead). Well, what she found was that the requirements for all journalism students are so strict, she was going to be forced to take many courses that she had no interest in - a lot of things related to becoming a journalist/reporter, things related to the news, etc. She wasn’t going to be able to get into her area courses until well into her junior year and even then, she would need to take other journalism requirements. She loves Mizzou but decided to switch to business and marketing at this point.
thanks @concernedmom27 That is really helpful.
May I ask one question? How many courses was your D eligible to test out of based on AP or IB? We’re counting on that for building some flexibility into my D’s schedule. Did your D find it too constrained even after having some time opened up in her schedule by getting AP credit? Thanks.
She was able to get credit for either 2 or 3 classes (I don’t recall) but that wasn’t really the issue for her. The issue was more of the courses that she was required to take vs. not having time in her schedule. You may find just the opposite as I hear most people are thrilled with the J-school and their classes. Better to take a look yourself. I found this page helpful as a start for seeing what you have to do your first two years: http://journalism.missouri.edu/programs/undergraduate/starting-your-program/pre-interest-area-requirements/
