Hi, I am currently an undergrad from CT still trying to decide where to transfer to in the fall.
Uconn is one option but I am concerned about the strength of its programs other than business and engineering, as it doesn’t appear to be particularly strong in other majors besides those.
I am leaning more towards a major in the humanities or social sciences.
My other concern is about the social life and general culture of the school.
It seems that the culture very much revolves around athletics (especially basketball apparently), but I simply don’t care about athletics. I am much more interested in strong academics and a curious and intellectual environment.
Is there a place or way for a student who doesn’t care about sports and is only interested in the intellectual, especially with regards to liberal arts, or will I feel out of place there? I am also concerned about what it would be like for me specifically, as I am in my mid-20s (because I took some time off from my education for several reasons.)
The location of the campus (Storrs) is also concerning to me as it seems quite rural and I am definitely more of a city person. Is there a way to see past this/overcome this, or will I be very bored there?
Finally I’m wondering what the networking opportunities and career placement prospects are for liberal arts majors?
