Stuck in a pretty bad situation..

I got accepted into UCI for this upcoming Fall (As public health). However, this last semester I received a D in a course that is not a major requirement. Long story but basically I didn’t need the class and it was too late for me to drop it or receive a W.
So I have a D, and there’s no summer course available. My GPA is still above a 3.0. I sent UCI admissions a very thought out letter as to why I got that grade in the course (there was a legitimate personal reason). I told them I’m willing to do whatever in order to still attend this Fall whether it’s retaking it on the side during Fall or being on academic probation or whatever it takes.
They replied telling me to send in my official transcripts for them to make a decision.
My major GPA is still a 3.8. Will they still let me attend?

I think you have a decent chance at them letting you attend. You still have a high GPA, and it seems that you have a pretty good reason for the mishap. I think you’ll be fine.

You’re fine. I was in a similar situation (going to UCI also) and asked my counselor about a D.
Ended up with a C somehow but she said:
as long as its a non major class and your Spring GPA is above 2.0 it’s no biggie

@yeahkevinn Thanks for your reply. How long ago did you get admitted to UCI?

@erichioro Thanks so much. I have no problem retaking the course either. I’ll keep you updated

@salsal1027 early april, sometime within the first couple weeks

Whoever just blew it off saying you’re fine isn’t the admissions office. It can go either way. You have a D. Just trying to keep it real so if it doesn’t work out you’re not blind-sided. Good luck.

@Ohm888 Actually this is exactly what my counselor at UCI, Jane Marovish told me.
But I guess every school and situation is different.

Someone up here last year was a UC-UC transfer to Berkeley. They had Letter of Reciprocity completed from their current UC (meaning they had completed all gen ed courses). Ended up they dropped one or whatever - anyway they were one course short of fulfilling GE (still over 60 units) and told the Berkeley advisor they would take in summer. UCB advisor said I don’t see an issue, but, of course it always goes to committee. He was rescinded.

I’ve seen other scenarios, same thing. Initial UC advisor says something shouldn’t be a problem and then they’re rescinded. The point is a D is always a big deal to the UC. Until he gets a direct final answer it’s simply not known what the committee will say. Thats my take-away, FWIW.
