“Are students allowed to have coffee makers in their dorm rooms? I saw the list of things that weren’t allowed, but not sure about coffee makers… Thanks…”

They’re technically allowed in dorm rooms, but you can’t use them IN the room. You can store them there and then use them in the kitchen. We had a small kitchen on our floor, and one of the girls actually just left her coffee maker out there for most of the year. Otherwise, you can take it out, use it, and then put it back in your room … or you can do what I did and just get instant coffee :-)

I kept a coffee machine in my room for four years. As long as you keep it unplugged when you aren’t using it you will be fine. For most things, it is best just to be discreet. I have never heard of anyone having a problem using their coffee machine in their room unless it was plugged in during inspections (I was an RA too and that was one of the things we look for). So just be smart about it.

Sounds like a supply of starbucks coffee concentrate packets would make a good gift.

pink, how much beach music and shagging do you see in my son’s future? ;)

There is also a starbucks in the library in which you can use your meal dollars.

“pink, how much beach music and shagging do you see in my son’s future?”

You go to Wake with rap music, baggy jeans, and “you guys” … you come back with country music, bow ties, and “y’all” A bit of an exaggeration but I’m sure everyone takes a little something “southern” with them when they go home (if you’re from the North @ least).

This.

My roommate & I got away with a couple things too … a few people on my floor had candles and whatnot. Just don’t burn down your dorm and you’ll be fine I suppose. Also, I think some things are more serious violations than others (i.e. an extension cord isn’t a huge deal but a giant knife probably is…) I know a girl on my floor had peppers spray which I think is a pretty big violation. Just don’t wave your violation around and you’ll be fine … but keep in mind the rules are there for a reason. Unattended candles, etc = bad ideas.

I have a quick question. Can you debunk your beds in Bostwick or is it too small?

“I have a quick question. Can you debunk your beds in Bostwick or is it too small?”

It really, REALLY depends on the room. Some people on my floor debunked with absolutely no problem. Others debunked but had verrrry little space to move around … and some, like my roommate and I, could not physically have both beds on the ground at the same time. Most people do not have a problem debunking if necessary, though. Recommendation: lofting.

If your statement shows you being billed for half of the yearly price of a double room, can you assume you will get a double room? D got her dorm assignment, but now is worried she will be stuck in a single.

If they are billing you for a double room, I’d say it’s safe to assume you’ll have a double. Worse comes to worse if your D ends up in a single room, she can try to switch out during room thaw. I’m sure switching out of a single would be easier than switching into one. There are always kids who don’t want roommates and would love to have a single.

quick question, could someone walk through how registration works for freshman? We understand they go in assigned groups to register on Aug 23/24 – but could a student walk through what should be expected and how that process works? Which classes fill up, etc… and are there any nuances we should share with our daughter? thanks

I don’t remember specifics to tell you the truth, but they make it VERRRRY clear how to register. If you don’t want to do it by yourself, they set up rooms with upperclassmen in them to help you register.

Classes with popular professors fill up the fastest. Some classes that are very difficult to get into include Abnormal Psychology, Computer Science, Contemporary Moral Problems, and this year Introduction to Italian. Don’t expect to get all the classes you want – if you can’t get the ones you want, get your divisionals out of the way! Utilize the wait lists!! There is always a chance that you can drop an unwanted class later to pick up one that you wanted. I got stuck with “Asia and the World” (actually seemed interesting but I am AWWWWFUL at history so it would be a GPA killer for me) but I ended up getting into an introductory psychology course that I was waitlisted in, so I dropped the history class.

I am trying to send you a private message and I am getting an error message that there’s no room until you clear some messages.

Sorry! Just cleared it – try to send it now! :)

I heard the dorm beds are extra long. Can I ge the exact size of the matress??

“I heard the dorm beds are extra long. Can I ge the exact size of the matress??”

I’m not sure what the exact size of the mattress is, and I’m not sure where you could find that information, but they make twin XL sheets & comforters that’ll most certainly fit :)

My son will be a freshman, living in Luter, in the fall. Since all the furniture is built-in except for the bunk beds (which I understand can be de-bunked and positioned in an L-shape if desired), where do students put items like TVs in the Luter dorm rooms?

Usually the XL Twin bed mattresses are 80" long (instead of 76" with a standard twin).

If you are a pre-med, can you use your Biology AP credit to skip intro to bio, or is that a required course for pre-meds for med school prerequisites?

Also, for other courses, if you submit your AP scores, do you have to take the next level course or can you still take the intro? I know with the placement test you cannot take an intro course if you place into a higher course.

And one more question. If I was interested in volunteering, do I have to contact whatever hospital or clinic i want to help out at now before move in, or can I get all of that done after I get to Wake? Same question with research.
Thank you!!!
