Student Answering Questions

Maybe it was just my friends, but I didn’t know any student who smoked. So it’s definitely not common at all (and the fire alarms are sensitive enough that someone who smokes in the dorm will only do it once). And, Pinkcupcake, as of January of this year, smoking indoors is illegal in all restaurants, bars, etc in North Carolina as well.

Regarding the meal plan, I always got as few meals as possible, and I tended to have tons of meals left over. But when you factor in that most people don’t get up early enough to go eat breakfast, that some of your extra-curricular activities will feed you dinner a couple of times a week, that you might get pizza or chinese or cookout (or go out to eat) with your friends once a week, and that there are other places on campus where you can get a meal for less than a meal would cost on the meal plan, it makes more sense to underestimate how many meals you’ll need than overestimate.

How do Wake kids find good teachers? Wake doesn’t have much on ratemyprofessors.com
so i wasn’t sure how you guys know which are the best teachers to get.

Also, do ppl visit other schools around (ie duke, unc, elon, high point, etc)?

Lastly, do frats and sororities have “formals”…do they go to like myrtle beach?

“How do Wake kids find good teachers? Wake doesn’t have much on ratemyprofessors.com

Wake has professors on Rate My Professors, Virtual Ratings, and Wake Ratings. Since Wake is pretty small you’ll generally know people who the professor in question, though.

“Also, do ppl visit other schools around (ie duke, unc, elon, high point, etc)?”

People do it. It’s not super common but if you have friends at one of these schools it isn’t hard to get there. If there’s a concert at one of them people will go.

“Lastly, do frats and sororities have “formals”…do they go to like myrtle beach?”

Not necessarily Myrtle, but yes. You’ll learn more about this if you come to Wake especially since it varies by fraternity.

which are considered the “tier 1” frats?

“which are considered the “tier 1” frats?”

Sorry, but I will not comment on tiers. Tiers are ridiculous and stupid. Although my Greek organization is “rated well”, I still refuse to use tiers. ALL of the Greek organizations are great, and everyone should choose one based on how they fit in there, not how "popular’ it is. I hope that this does not come off as rude – I just hate how everything can be turned into a popularity contest.

whoopfer, I have to confess that I’ve wondered the same thing myself. But, pink, I’m glad you answered that way. I was hoping you’d take the high road.

haha pinkcupcake i understand…are fraternities housed together, or do they just have a common area where they meet?

When will students find out their mailbox number? (It would be nice to notify subscribtions in advance.)

so do frats have their own houses or do they throw parties in brothers’ houses or what?

wneckkid99, did you get in as a transfer to Wake Forest. if you dont mind me asking, what were your stats

“haha pinkcupcake i understand…are fraternities housed together, or do they just have a common area where they meet?”

Each frat has a lounge in a dorm building (except two which only have off campus housing, although one of those two is riiiight off campus). Most of the sophomores live on the halls (some juniors & seniors do too). Each frat also has off campus housing but that varies by fraternity. These are not school-affiliated houses – they’re basically just houses that brothers live in and they throw parties in them. Sophomores are required to live on campus, Greek or not, so the lounges are really convenient. The same thing goes for sororities, although sororities don’t really throw parties of their own.

“so do frats have their own houses or do they throw parties in brothers’ houses or what?”

No. Frats do not have houses that are University provided, like a Greek row. See above response for the rest.

“When will students find out their mailbox number? (It would be nice to notify subscribtions in advance.”

I’m not 100% certain on this one. I know that I knew mine before I got here (and when you get here, you get your mailbox key in a little envelope with the number on it) … I think that after you get your WIN username & password you can search for yourself in the internal directory to find out your mailbox number. I’d call the school and ask to be sure, though!

thanks a lot

does wake forest have a golf course on campus, and are any students allowed to play on it?

There is not a course on campus itself.

“does wake forest have a golf course on campus, and are any students allowed to play on it?”

I do not believe so. However, a girl on my floor plays club golf, and she wanted me to tell you that it’s awesome.

On a side note, I hope you guys enjoyed Campus Day today if you came!

do you have to try out, or can a beginner join the team

Another kind of random question, hows the weather in Winston-Salem?

Sunny most times? Rainy? Does it snow a lot in the winter? Is there any kind of natural disasters, like earthquakes and tornadoes, you get the idea, that might be a concern?

Thanks

D is a senior, graduating next month. This winter was not typical – it was much colder, with more rain and even snow than normal. And when it does snow, things really come to a standstill since they’re not equipped to handle it. (This is true for all the southern states, not just WFU.) Her freshman year she wore flip-flops through most of the winter. Although she’s looking forward to “coming home” to New England, she says she’s definitely going to miss those incredible “Carolina blue” skies and the typical mild winters. Wake does seem to have a drainage problem in some places on campus, so when it rains there are areas of huge puddles. No earthquakes or tornadoes during D’s 4 years.

We went to the Campus day yesterday and the decision has been made that my son is going to go to Wake. I would really like him to be in Johnson Dorm. He has never been into the party scene at all. Never tasted alchohol. I know from everything I have read and talking to students that he needs to be ready for a heavy work load at Wake.

And he needs to be ready right off the bat so that he gets off to a great start.

Common sense tells me he is better off at Johnson and away from a lot of the other issues that are bound to happen at other dorms.
I do not want to necessarily make it a demand that he lives there but I would love to have more ammunition when we get into the decision phase.
Your thoughts?
