My coach recommended me to do a walk on for lacrosse. I have a friend playing D1 soccer at Loyola, and she says that the student athletes do not interact with non-athletes. In fact, they call them peasants. Is that true for Penn State as well? If so, that kind of limits the meeting new people experience doesn't it?

I don’t have an answer for your question, but I would strongly advise you to get in contact with the coach at any school you are looking at walking on to. Traditional walk on spots (where you show up for tryouts freshman year) are a think of the past in most places.

I don’t know about lacrosse, but for many sports, the walk on roster spots have been allocated a year or more before the players arrive.

you can choose who you want to interact with or not…I think calling non athletes peasants is a little much, but athletes tend to stick together, on any campus really.

Like Dread said, PSU mens lax is pretty good, I don’t think theres really show up and walk on spots, most walk ons are invited walk ons anymore…recruited without a scholarship basically.

I dont go there yet Im a senior in HS still but I’ve heard from friends who go there as a student athlete you’ll live in Pollock Halls. So you wont be segregated from non athletes, a lot of non athletic freshman, and some non freshman, in that hall. You’ll be very busy obviously so that might take away from some social time, but you wont be prevented from hanging with other people in your free time. I play lacrosse too but I just want to stick to club/ intramural. I love lacrosse as much as anyone but I wouldn’t put myself through the stress that comes with D1 for ultimately little reward. As a walk on they usually don’t give money and theres obviously no future in lacrosse like say football, so I would just have fun on the lower levels. But either way you have liberty to hang out with whoever you want.

I think it depends on the team. I know many varsity athletes live in West Halls where there aren’t many freshmen at all.
