PrintEmail Article Tools Page 1 of 1 Two Notre Dame students died this weekend in separate and unrelated incidents, University officials said Sunday evening.

One of the students, Connor McGrath, was a sophomore who moved to Siegfried Hall in January. He died Sunday morning or early afternoon, Siegfried rector Father John Conley told students gathered at the dorm's Mass Sunday night.

McGrath's death did not take place in Siegfried, Conley said. His address was the first official notice to Siegfried residents of McGrath's death.

Local news outlets reported that a student died in Dillon Hall Sunday. This was unconfirmed Sunday night by University officials, who also had not released McGrath's name.

A call reporting an unresponsive male at Dillon was placed to the South Bend Fire Department at 1:39 p.m. Sunday, a fire department spokeswoman said. The ambulance arrived at Dillon at 1:53 p.m. and did not make a transport, she said.

No name has been released in the second death, but a number of dorm rectors said the student was not an undergraduate.

University President Father John Jenkins expressed condolences to the families of the two students through a statement Sunday night.

"On behalf of the entire University, my deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of these two members of the Notre Dame family," Jenkins said. "Our prayers are with them during this difficult time."

The University will release further information once the immediate families of the two students have contacted other family members, University spokesman Dennis Brown said.

Local news outlets reported that Notre Dame Security/Police responded to the scene Sunday, but The Observer was unable to reach the NDSP spokesman Sunday night.

According to a report in the South Bend media, the second student was a law student who passed away in London. No name or details were mentioned.

The first student died due to a diabetic coma. The second was a Law student in London .

Connor McGrath was in my dorm and went to my high school for a few years, I knew him somewhat well. He was a bright kid, although somewhat misbehaved, and I think he passed at a high point in his life where he was able to make a fresh start and was surrounded by friends and family who loved him here.

He was in my management class. We said a prayer for him yesterday in class--so incredibly sad. Say a prayer for his loved ones.

I'm in that "class" too.

Just wondering if it has been confirmed that Connor McGrath died from Diabetes complications? I'm curious b/c my daughter has poorly controlled diabetes.

to Russ08, Connor did die of diabetes. I am his mother and am very worried for all parents of diabetics. He died of ketoacidosis which caused swelling in his brain. He was on a pump, as was a friend of mine who died at age 53 only a few weeks after Connor. Be very diligent if your daughter gets on the pump and have her test more than often as there lies no residual insulin in the body with the pump versus shots.

I'm so sorry, MerryOh. You, your son, and your family is in everyone's prayers. I hope the Notre Dame family came through for you.

Condolences and prayers from me as well!

RIP C.McGrath

MerryOh,
I am so sorry for your loss. We have a 16 yo neighbor who is on a pump as well. I had no idea that the pump could leave someone with no insulin at all. Thank you for educating us.

Merry Oh- our hearts break for you and your family. Thank you for posting on CC and warning others of these dangers.
Our son is a sophomore at ND, and he said the entire campus was saddened when this happened.
We are so very, very sorry for your loss.
Sincere sympathy from a ND mom who cried many tears about Connor.

Merry Oh, I sent you a private message. Thank you so much for reaching out to us during this tragic time. May God bless your family. We are all so sorry for you. Not that this is any consolation to you right now, but my daughter has been trying harder with her diabetes since Connor's death.

MerryOh,

Thank you for posting here - that cannot be an easy thing to do.

My family and I are so very sorry for your loss. Written words are inadequate to convey our sympathy, but know that we wish you peace.

Thanks to all of you for sending condolences. It does give me comfort to know that many prayers are being sent up for Connor and for all of us grieving his loss. Yes, ND did come thru for us. Everyone there has been tremendous, our family didn't even have to go up there to school to get him or his things, and it was all handled with the utmost respect. Priests, administration and students from ND also came to his beautiful funeral here in OKC. He touched many lives with his vivacious spirit.

Please tell your Juvenile Diabetic to test often. I wrote a private note to Russ08, but want to tell you all some of it:

If they're on a pump make sure he/she is not alone after testing HI on their test kit until their blood sugar comes down. They lose the ability to think clearly and then don't or won't call for help. I'm just a parent, but Connor's sister and I hope to do some good someday in the field of diabetes education. We never stopped learning new things about diabetes, shots, pumps, types of insulin, ketones, the whole nine yards. Best advice, talk to your diabetes educators often. Their bodies change so much with growing, the way they need to manage their diabetes changes too.

God bless you all
