I tried to search on Tulane.edu but could not find the info. I would like to know the mailbox that was assigned to each student in the Freshmen year - is it good for all four years or is it only good when the student stays on campus? DS is moving off campus for his Junior year and I wonder if I can still mail things to his Tulane mailbox so he does not need to worry about waiting at the rental apt to sign and receive it.

My guess is that it is only for on-campus residents. I don’t think there are enough mailboxes for every student. But you could e-mail or call housing and they could tgell you for sure.

If your S knows anyone continuing to live on campus, maybe he could have packages sent to that student and coordinate to get the package from them. Probably no worse than trying to arrange a delivery to an empty apartment.

I hope they get to keep their mailbox for all 4 years. Are you sure there aren’t enough for all students, FC? I think it would be very confusing if they reassigned a mailbox to an incoming student when current students had that box #. My older s got to keep his mailbox (different school) when he lived off campus. If you find out the answer for sure, Stonebridge, please post it here.

Nope, not sure at all. That is why I said I am guessing and that they should call housing. But I don’t think Bruff has 5,500 or so mailbox slots. Maybe they handle it a different way, I will be interested in the answer also.

FC guesses correctly. Once a student moves off-campus, the mailbox is no longer available.

Thanks for the legwork, Stonebridge. The other option I thought of is if there is a UPS mailbox store nearby, or a similar outfit. Extra cost obviously, but at least an alternative.

There is one other option, but one would have to be in a very good relationship with a department. When I was a grad student (not at Tulane) I had a mailbox in the chemistry department office. I feel 95% sure that while I was doing research as an undergrad at Tulane, had I asked they would have let me get mail at the department also. But I lived on campus all 4 years so it wasn’t an issue. Anyway, if your son is in a similar situation, that is yet another alternative, maybe. Kind of a long shot, but at least for packages they might be amenable.

You just gave me an idea! We have a friend who is a faculty member at Tulane. If we have to mail DS something and he is not available to sign at his apt, we can always mail it to my friend’s office. I guess not everyone has such luxury :)

I asked my s about the mailbox thing last night, and he very matter-of-factly said yeah, he knew he wouldnt have an on campus mailbox next year. I suppose if necessary we could send someting to the lab he works in. He said any packages delivered to his house would sit on the front porch. Not sure I’m liking that, but he said his house is in a fine area, so no worries. (tell that to a worried mom)
